Running Stock Tune with a bunch of mods (inspection)

LS7 Ignition
Ported intake manifold

Can I run a stock tune in my car and pass inspection in MA without problems? I would replace the Anaconda downpipe with the stock pipes and run the stock tune through the car for a week or so before going in for inspection.

I guess I just have a hard time believing that I can run the stock tune and all of the mods above (minus the Anaconda) without problems and still pass inspection.

Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Intake and exhaust (midpipe back, or if you have an Anaconda, fully remove it), Wastegate actuator, ported intake, bypass solenoid should be ok. Downpipe, injectors, BNR turbo, LS7 coils will NOT run on the stock tune.

If I remember correctly you can't run the LS7 ignition or the 42lb injectors without a tune!

Thanks for the replies. Have people been removing their BNR turbos, LS7 ignitions, and injectors just to pass inspection every year? Is there an aftermarket tune that I could use with all of those parts installed to pass inspection (and only replace the Anaconda with the stock pipes for smog)?

What does your state/town require for emissions tests? If they are only checking the ECM you could buy a 90° defouler and run that with the O2 sensor and it shouldn't throw a code on the stock tune!

You are correct. They don’t do tail pipe tests in MA. All they do is plug in to the OBD port. But I have never passed with the tune installed and I have never passed with the anaconda system.

Why don’t cars pass with aftermarket tunes? I didn’t have any codes or anything.

Honestly, you should be.

Someone needs to talk to Jerry about this and see if he has a way to account for the mods, handle the readiness test issues, and make the tune appear stock. The inspection machines can determine if the tune is not stock and will fail the car if it is tuned.

I have talked to a few buddies about this since starting the thread. All of their tuners account for these issues in the tune. All they have to do is drive in and pass without having to revert anything back to stock. This is because of the tuner, according to them.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

I don’t have a source on that. This is just what I have been told by people who have been getting tuned cars inspected in MA for years. I also failed inspection with the Trifecta tune and I wasn’t throwing any codes. My readiness tests were all fine and I still failed.

BNR tunes will pass emissions inspection just fine if they're only doing an OBD2 check. If you have a catless exhaust and they do a tailpipe sniffer, you'll fail because of that, but that's not the tune.

Just to clarify for those reading this thread, you're currently trifecta tuned? I'm seeing a lot of talk about failing with a BNR tune so I just want to make sure you are not BNR tuned and failing.

In MA I passed fine with my tuned Audi with no cat and an O2 spacer. Passed with the Sonic with just a Trifecta tune, a tuned Acadia and a couple tuned Trailblazers.

I passed Texas inspection with a full straight pipe plus resonator of course I'm not an animal... MPFAB intake + IC kit, BOV, bypass mod, ported intake, and 42lb injectors, BNR tuned. No problems with the inspection. I didn't flash to stock or put the cat back in.

I wouldn't call what you have now "a bunch of mods" but if you flash it to stock it'll work for about 40 miles before it tells you your primary cat isn't working, well the joke is on the computer because I don't have one!

With your future mods it won't work flashing to stock, mostly the injectors, or the ignition. The turbo probably would work as will everything else probably but it'll likely run like crap.

If you live in a state where your inspection is just plugging into the OBDII they're really just looking for codes. I have the straight pipe exposed I don't have the cover or anything. You can tell I don't have any cats the car isn't even lowered and I passed. However if they do sniffers then you'd probably have to put the cat back on.

Those things don't work. I have one on my car and when I flashed to stock I got a CEL after about 40 miles. that was before upgrading the injectors and other things that actually require a tune.

I have a BNR tune that I have not yet installed in the car (I am waiting to swap the car to stock pipes and run the stock tune for a week so I can send that file to Jerry for tuning).

What I am most concerned about here is future inspections (next year and beyond) with all of the mods I mentioned in my initial post installed in the car. Is there a way for Jerry to determine on his end whether or not I will pass and ensure me that, with all of the parts installed (including turbo, injectors, and ignition) that there is no doubt that I will pass with his tune?

I know for a fact that MA inspection bays just plug into the OBDII port. They do not do "sniffer" tests. However, as of last year, MA has eliminated the use of 30-day Rejection stickers for cars that don't pass. So, basically, if a car does not pass inspection it is a pretty big deal. The car will not be legally capable of being driven on public roads. So, with this being said, it is very important that I pass the first time I go in. I need to be absolutely sure that the car will pass before I go in for inspection going forward.

Please shed some light on Jerry's capabilities here.

If you are running catless and don't have a cel then trifecta probably tuned the cel out and thats why you won't pass. On the Audi I had to flash back to stage 1 (cel not tuned out) and had to run the 02 spacer to not have the cel come on.

If all they do is an OBDII check, you will pass with a BNR tune. I cannot comment on trifecta, I was only wanting to clarify that you were failing with a trifecta tune installed, and not a BNR tune. Yes we can check before you go in and make sure it will pass. You can check the emissions readiness monitors in EFILive Scan Tool any time you want.

If your car doesn't pass, it probably failed the "readiness" test---it means you didn't drive enough with the stock tune.

If you flash a new tune, drive it for about 200 miles or so and then it will throw the "ready" code (internally, nothing you'll be able to see) and then you should pass, assuming there's no CEL.
