Running Without a Key??

Hey guys,

New 1.4 LT Hatch owner, and from the get go of buying my Sonic it has always remained running after I turn the key and take it out. The engine keeps going until all people have left the vehicle and closed their doors. Once the last door closes the engine shuts off and the car automatically locks itself.

Is this a normal thing?

Hmmm, I would say no. Turbo cooling down, however engine shuts off after the key is out? Ignition switch/sensor issue maybe? Can't imagine it was programmed that way. Have you tried to drive it without the key in it? I'm no engine expert so others might have a better idea. Weird.

Sounds like a remote start setup for a manual transmission. Friend's Subaru had a similar system.

No, I haven't tried driving without the key, so far it really hasn't been an issue because every time I take the key out, I'm getting out of the car so its been relatively convenient.

I'm also nervous to try driving it without the key and causing it to do something weird. I might have to give it a try though.

Don't try driving without the key as the steering wheel could lock and then you could have a REAL problem!

Sounds pretty convenient. It may not let you shift out of park. I guess I'd leave well enough alone.

Update guys!

So, inadvertently I learned that while parking, if I hold the brake, turn off the car and then engage the E-brake the car shuts off immediately. If I hold the brake, engage the E-brake then shut off the car, it keeps running until all doors are closed.

Still not really sure what the difference is, but I guess I'll just have to wait until it's off to pull on the ebrake.

I'll keep you posted if I figure out what this is though!

BustaHymz, Do you have an automatic transmission with the "Remote Start" option on the key fob?

I have a manual (which for obvious reasons the remote start wasn't available), so I'm really reaching out and asking my Sonic forum friends who have the Remote Start feature. Can you inadvertently hold the remote start button down and remove the key (preventing shut down) until the doors are shut, killing the engine? Is this possible?

BustaHymz, if you don't have the Remote Start feature on your key fob, I'd like to see this on YouTube showing you removing the key out of the ignition and the car continues to run. This is really weird! opcorn:
