Ok I am needing a little help and some ideas for the little sonic.

I am planning on doing more auto crosses next year and fall is here so time to retool for next year.

First off I need help making sure I am in the right class. All the auto crosses I have been club events with no classes just run what you got.

2014 sonic sedan LT
1.4 turbo
ZZP 93 octane tune
Down pipe ZZP
Mid pipe ZZP
17 inch ltz summer wheels Hankooks
15 inch winter ice spikes
Shifter bushings
Shifter cable clamp

That is the small list on the car.

So now I am working to get the right class I am not looking to dominate I just want to eliminate the winers if I actually do beat a few people haha.

Now for the other portion of this thread. I al looking to put another set of wheels for auto cross. I do commute in the little car so I do not want to drive everyday 50 miles a day commute. On a set of sticky tires.

As for the wheels and tires. My events I noticed that 3rd was a bit tall and 2nd seemed too short. This was the case in both events I did this year. In the past I got a shorter tire to change up the gearing. Thoughts?

I run smaller tires on my 1.8 but not on the 1.4

This is what I was looking at for gear ratios and tire sizes.

I know of a set of 15 inch wheels I can get cheap so I was thinking of going that way. What size tire and type are you running?

My 1.8 track car runs a 205/50/15hoosiers

The 1.4 has a set of 225/45/17" Dunlop zIIs


If your gonna run a street tire I would go with 17"s. They may be heavier per wheel but the trade off is the amount if side wall flex compared to 15"s

I just run mine in HS (since stock, no tune, etc) but run the 215/45R17 RE71R tires on stock LTZ wheels. It's a 1.4 turbo and gearing seems to be ok at my local events, I've normally pax'd pretty high with it.

I won't be auto crossing the Sonic anymore now as my 350Z is now up and running in STU class. The Sonic will get a tune and other mods and still be my daily driver so I'm thinking of selling the wheels with the RE71R tires if you're interested?

The 350 will be a better track car for sure.

"better" depends on what your looking for.

It's easy to get cought up in "well he is faster then me"

Do it for fun and the smile!

I have been racing my first sonic for years now. May not always be the fastest thing in the class but it's a hell of a ride and always brings a smile and enjoyment

I will date myself but I used to auto cross my 1993 SW2 5 speed wagon it was a new car then.... They called me the Grocery getter at the local events.

Old thread I know, but I've been doing a one or two autocross events for the past few years and I'm looking to do it more regularly. Thing is I never truly know if I'm classing my car correctly. I currently use a 2006 Nissan SE-R for my autocross days as I just don't want to beat on my sonic too bad just yet. What exactly puts the OP into SMF? Is it his tune? Exhaust? I've researched countless hours on the web for autocross classes and the best doc I could find is here

For example, my sonic is similar to the OP and according to the doc above, it falls into the STS class, from what I can tell.

Can anyone help me class my two cars?

My Sonic LTZ turbo:
BNR 93 Tune
ZZP Intake
GM Performance Suspension
4H Tech Short Shifter
ZZP Shifter Bushings
Grimspeed Weighted shiftknob
Falken Azenis Performance All season (500 Treadwear)

Then my Nissan SE-R Spec V(According to the doc above, this would be STX):
Nismo Cold Air Intake
XS Header
Nismo Cat-Back Exhaust
Front Sway Bar
Throttle body spacer
Firehawk Wide Oval Indy 500 (320 Treadwear)

I'm looking to get coilovers for the Nissan soon as its still on original factory suspension with 172k miles on it. Also, want to get stickier tires as I hear I can go as low as 200 treadwear for the lesser modified classes with 225 width or less.

Final thoughts, my last autoX event I ran the Nissan in STX and it felt like I was in the correct class. Ran with a few Focus STs and a few BRZ/FR-S. If I would have had stickier tires with coilovers, I feel I could have at least come very close to the the BR-Z/FR-S lap times.
