Seeking tips on driving the auto transmission in manual mode

I am familiar with driving a manual transmission (though in the most basic sense). I haven't yet tried using the manual option on my automatic, but I want to have a more fun driving experience (I'm also planning on extensive manual driving training come Spring). The manual option, imho, is pretty great, because it offers some of the fun of the full manual without the pressure (and if you screw up, you can always slip back into auto). Looks like all one needs to do, really, is monitor the RPM and shift up or down in time. Any other tips? Would love your advice.

If you're driving for fuel economy you'll want to shift as soon as it will let you, probably around 2,000 RPM.

For more spirited driving shifting at 5,500 RPM will give you the fastest acceleration.
