Short Shifter vs. Cable Clamp for reducing 2nd gear grind

I'd like to begin taking measures to reduce this 2nd gear grind. It's been grinding my gears more often than usual lately (pun intended).

Which upgrade is the best place to start? I'm aware that the tranny oil is a big factor but I'll be tackling that a little later down the road. All opinions are welcome.

Also, where can I order he best tranny oil? Is there a particular oil that is regarded as the best.

Shifter bushings are en route, by the way.

Ive noticed a reduction in grinds from a hard launch since ive installed my short shifter. I would highly recommend one. i dont have a cable clamp installed, but the short shifter along with the bushings give the transmission a nice snap. I dont think the grind will ever be totally eliminated though. Driver mod is the best bet

I think I'm going to go ahead and try the short shifter.

As for the tranny fluid, what should I get? I did a search and found a couple posts from a few years ago but they were talking about different oils. Have we discovered a "best" yet?

Hey fellas, appreciate this thread. I have an M-Tech short shifter on my 2017 Premier. For clarity, it's this one on the newer models. Full circle eh?



Anyway, just wondering how the cable clamps would fit? They must be much smaller than how I picture them, kind of like the TB spacer. Just looks bigger online - (obligatory "that's what she said" lol)

Any insights appreciated. Amsoil on the way...

I did the clamp and bushings. But I didn't stop the grinds until I changed my fluid over to Redline....

I have an M-tech in my 2015 i am not sure the cable support will fit with the short shifter as the cable pin is moved closer to the pivit point. The ZZP reinforcement is a hollow aluminum sleeve that goes over the top of the plastic end on the cable-ITS THIN. g

I have another observation that may be the root cause of gear grind when shifting. Because the Sonic throttle is controlled by wire, and not directly operated mechanically by linkage or a cable: There is the tendency for rev-hang, or simply put, the throttle continues to be applied for a brief moment after releasing it. Also the mass of the clutch/flywheel contributes to the difficulty of performing a clean shift. To facilitate a shift, the engine and transmission speeds must synchronize. If the throttle is still being applied when clutching, there is no way the transmission synchronizers can compensate for the mismatch in engine/transmission/clutch rpm.

I've found if you release the throttle just slightly prior to clutching to facilitate a shift, the transmission provides little resistance to the up-shift. This is difficult to perform, as one has the tendency to simultaneously release the throttle as the clutch is depressed. Those of you that experience this grind when up-shifting, try doing this. I've experimented with this extensively, and seldom have a grind or a resistance from the transmission even when operating in cold weather conditions. Remember- Release throttle first, then clutch and shift. I'm sure that the remedies some of you have implemented have helped, but I firmly believe the root cause is related to the rev-hang caused by controlling the throttle indirectly/electronically.

You can do both but you will have to grind away a little bit to modify the short shifter to accommodate the cable clamp. I feel once I combined both then that’s when I got rid of any issues. Of course that’s already including the bushings
