God, I want this, if they didn't offer me a measily 3k for a trade-in she would be mine. Interior is nowhere near as cool as my red& black but that exterior with gunmetal wheels and carbon fiber bits would be ***y.

Cool blue 2014 hatchback with problem

I have 2014 cool blue hatchback Sonic LT and get compliments on color and style all the time. And boy is it easy to find in parking lots.

BUT have had weird problem with battery corrosion/leakage destroying cables TWICE. (I don't learn quickly but was told bad battery was unusual.)

First battery gone within a year. Replaced under warranty.Plus parts ruined by acid leakage. Two years later, yesterday went to add windshield wash and saw blue corrosion had pushed up the plastic cover on battery terminals.

Two months out of warranty but argued that this was same problem they didn't fix first time. I'm out of the car over weekend and have to pay $125 for part they're (hopefully) getting Monday but dealer is covering new battery and labor.

Any ideas why two batteries in three years would be leaking out.

PS. And for Syrup's question, I do have touch screen display and hands free telephone. I love this car more than any other I've had. Bought it brand new and it's already more problems than others. Feel there's a reason batteries are boiling out.

not sure, but
- water on or around battery, battery tray
- bad contacts
- bad quality or wrong battery
- bad alternator
- Short driving time (battery doesn't get to charge fully driving very short trips)
- battery load (running more than your battery can handle)
- location (living near ocean, sea spray)

may want to look into fitting a battery box to protect the battery.

Regarding your battery leaking/corrosion issues: The Sonic's charging system is likely the root cause; it is more complex than one would believe necessary. I have a digital voltmeter wired in to monitor the alternator output and battery voltage; the variation in output is alarming, and is probably why a voltmeter isn't included in the instrumentation. The link describes how the charging system maintains the battery in the Sonic. It used to be a whole lot simpler when a solid state regulator was a replaceable component inside the alternator; it worked well for decades, and now we have something more difficult to diagnose and repair if a problem arises.

Is this what causes the weird ticking noise in the engine bay when I open the door? Or is that a fuel pump primer or something. It also happens after I shut the car off and let it rest. I noticed it when cleaning the inside of the car. it was like a Burrrrr-tat-tat-tat-tat-tat-click.

I haven't noticed this on my Sonic, but haven't really listened for a noise as described. A guess would suggest the evaporative emission canister purge solenoid valve that is relieving fuel tank pressure after a shutdown.

Hi Lila, For my battery acid issue it should be the correct battery dealer put both replacements in but short driving and living by ocean in Florida do apply to me. I did have a Chevy Aveo for 8 years here that never had acid boil up problem.

I'm wondering if something is up with my ignition cylinder and or electrical. Battery is dealer installed one month ago and today I drove seven miles to store and car wouldn't start up again. No noise, no lights on dash. Tried twice, then took key out, checked under hood looked OK. Reinserted key and it started. Went to two more stops and car restarted normally. But now have lost my car will start security feeling.

This is a 2014 Chevy Sonic LT 34,000 miles. I have always felt that I have to push/jam key in, it's not an easy slide. There have been times when I remove the key it's burning hot. I'd mentioned this to dealer when I was still under warranty and got the she's a wacko look.

Charging System

There is likely a short circuit somewhere in your car. Probably in the ignition if the key is very hot. Batteries should not do this and if they do, something else is causing it. I've got 3 sonics, about 100k miles combined and all have the original battery with no problem.
