Subwoofer Help

ok this question is for all the smart ones out there and for anyone who cares to chime in. i want to put 2 8 inch subs in my hatchback i was thinking of cutting out holes in the carpeted cardboard like piece that hides the extra storage space could i do that and just drop the subs in there and screw them down and not put in a box or would they not work or produce crappy sound?? secondly i have only ever owned mtx audio subwoofers i had 12's and most recently in my last car a gmc jimmy 2 10's in a ported box but they dont make 8 inch subs any recommendations on subs would be greatly appreciated guys i listen to rap and rock thanks everyone for your opinions

You would need to build a box, unless you find infinite baffle subwoofers.

If you listen to rap 8" subs are going to do nothing for you, you would want at the minimum 12". You need a larger surface area to move all that air to pick up the lower notes.

I would personally go with 2 shallow mount 12's. Perfect for a mix of rock/rap.

As far as quality goes my top three are Rockford Fosgate, JL audio, and Alpine type r or x.

I highly disagree with that. Ive heard 2 8s hit 155s all day and hit lower than most set ups with 15s. Its all about the box you build and how much money you want to sink into it. If you are going sealed, I would go 12s. If you have the ability to build a box, you will double if not triple the output of 2 8s over the 12s. Now saying that, the 8s have to be of high quality. Brands like Sundown Audio, Skar, FI, etc..One of the set ups I helped build was 2 Sundown audio 8s in a ported box for a pickup truck. It hit frequencies in the 30s like it was nothing. And loud enough to close off your throat a little.

I gotta agree with supersonicrs on this. 8s will beat but you'll be more satisfied with 12s. I have 2 12 jl audio and a 1000 watt kenwood amp in a ported box (not currently in my car) and I paid around $800 brand new installed by custom sounds (a company close to where I live)

Its not a matter of opinion. You cant agree with one or another. Based on facts you are more than capable of using 8s to hit in the lower frequency ranges as good if not better than 12s.

That being said. If its a lower budget, then go with 12s.

You are right sonic007, with higher end components 8" subs will out perform base 12" speakers. I was just under the impression that he wasn't looking into throwing over a grand into his system.

I had a 10" fosgate p3 runing 500rms at 2ohms that hit just as hard as my buddies 2 12inch mtx speakers.

If you take the same speaker with all things being equal except speaker size, the larger woofer cone will be able to reproduce the lower notes with greater ease with more thump.

thanks for all your opinions guys my last car was a 2001 gmc jimmy and i had this exact setup in there

those hit way loud i dont have the same amount of space in my hatch like i did in the jimmy i dont need that much bass in my sonic like in my jimmy with 2 10's in a ported box i just want bass period but without using a lot of space cause i still use my hatch area. talking money i would like to keep my budget at 100$ or less per sub im totally fine with 8's guys i have had 12's and 10's like i said other than mtx audio i never have had or tried any other brand

Ahh man the Rockford p3s are my fav 12s ever made on a budget. We used to sell them but we dropped Rockford. I used to have those cheap MTX Terminator 12s and they rocked for what they were..

ya i liked the mtx magnums i had i chose those over the terminator setup in my last car amazon has real good deals on 8 inch subs in my price range just wasnt sure what was good and what wasnt thanks for the help i already got an infinity setup for door speakers on the way

hey sonic007 after doing hours and hours of research i think i have found some subs in my budget

if i choose these what would be better 2 ohm or 4ohm? and what wattage amp would you recommend 2 channel 4 channel? mono block? and i what about a ported or sealed box?? or is that my choice lol sonicelectronix has 2 boxes i like ones ported and ones sealed thanks for your help

Looks like those are dual 2. So you can wire the coils on each sub in parallel, then the subs in series to a mono or 2 channel amp bridged. That will be 2 ohms on the amp. I would look for something at at least 600rms at 2 ohms. No higher than 800rms. Sundowns sound better in ported boxes for sure. Especially if your into hip hop/ rap.

according to the sundown audio website it recommends an enclosure that has a depth of 5.118" inches and the box i am looking at has a depth of 8.25
