The "cheap" exhaust option

So I'm a broke college student, and I really want to modify the exhaust on my RS to both gain some sound, and to get a more aggressive appearance. (I don't mind too much about the power gains)

So here is my idea of a solution...

I really like the lookMagnaFlow muffler on Wong's sonic, and Ive always been in love with the subaru/Evo "can" style slanted exhaust,

And-

I'd like to do this the cheapest way possible.

Do you guys think going to an exhaust shop with a knock off muffler that has a removable silencer (basically a hollow faux muffler), and removing/ straight piping the resonator would give me a good turn out??


**summary- straight pipe exhaust with a faux "invidia subaru can" looking muffler good idea??

Please feel free to tell me I'm an idiot and I should save up for a real cat back, but in my mind, pipe is pipe, and it all does the same thing...

What's wrong with the RS tip? It's already aggressive looking, a few non RS owners would be happy with it on their LT, or LTZs'.


You're cheapest bet would be taking your car to a exhaust shop and having them cut out the muffler and replace it with a pcs of straight pipe.

And/or you could buy q fart can for them to bolt on........ Cheaper yet would be having them graft on some huge pipe for a pseudo fart can look.......... Or throw on a huge a$$ tip........ Non of which are very classy thou.

You could also replace the resonator with a pcs of straight pipe. BUT if you don't have a muffler in the system it will be obnoxiously loud which gets old really fast.

I read somewhere on the RS forum that the stock tip has two useless 90 degree bends that really restrict airflow, but I could be mis-reading...

I had my muffler cut off and a straight pipe with a tip welded on. It sounds decent. I can hear it much better than stock, and it doesn't sound like a fart can. But with no other mods, I think my sonic definitely qualifies as rice. I still want to get the borla stainless kit. It just has a nice blurble, but isn't loud.

Volume level is moderate with straight pipe on these turbo motors. Here is a link to mine.

Before I vote idiot can I ask you what your GPA and Major are?

Strikes me that some personal restraint is in order. Maybe focus on school, get A's, get a good job and then you will not be a poor college student which will thus solve your problem. Seriously, it sounds pretty dumb to me that you are poor and yet you still feel compelled to spend your money in a frivolous way.

What ever your major, I am betting heavy odds it is not Finance.

Stop giving this guy a hard time obviously he's not so broke he is starving he just doesn't have the money for an 800$ exhaust. I am strait piped 2.5" from first cat to end with an aggressive looking euro dual outlet type tip its loud and i wish i would havd gone borla or something of that nature however i paid 120 for the whole thing and it sounds mean and has a rumble of something way more powerful. For purely your your pleasure why the hell not i bet the wholr setup could be done for 175 with a fart can not my idea of attractive but if you like it do it. Post pics of your results I'm sure there are more people who would appreciate the f&f look.

Congrats on the tune! Do what you want with your exhaust. There are plenty of guys with chopped up exhausts. If I where you I'd straight pipe the muffler out and leave the stock tip and ride that out until you can afford the exhaust you want.

My first mod was muff and res delete. It sounded pretty good... About right volume wise in my opinion. If you're gonna put a high flow muff on too I'd delete the second cat as well. I ran mine like that as well and it sounded good

why not go the super cheap route and just do it yourself?? how hard could it be to take the muffler off with a saws-all then buy some metal pipe in the right diameter from pep-boys or whatever, use some clamps to attach it and then throw a tip on the end, job done. Right? seems like that would be the cheapest, plus you would be able to get your hands dirty
