Turbo gone again..

Two years ago my turbo failed, which was covered under warranty however I had to get Chevy involved because the dealership was trying to pull a fast one on me. Well now two years later this turbo is dead. Called Chevy yesterday and explained what was going on. They let me know that there was only a year warranty on the replaced turbo.

Anyways I said there is no reason why the turbo should have died this soon. I have to bring my car to the dealership tomorrow to have it checked out.

Has anyone else gone through multiple turbos? I have about had it with this car. If this turbo doesn't get covered I have no clue what I am going to do. Cannot afford one out of pocket. I should have realized the first time I purchased a Chevy and didn't buy another.

Honestly, I've only had my turbo die on me once, but that was from my own doing racing the car and doing constant boosted launches. They aren't even that difficult to replace either. replaced mine in the parking lot of my work.

How have your oil levels been? Have you been burning or losing oil?

The only things I can think would kill one, low oil/oil starvation or the bypass valve not functioning correctly and the turbo is getting buffeted with feedback air since the valve isn't opening.
I will advise, that on ANY cold start up, let the car idle until the RPM's drop down then drive normally for a few miles to warm up the oil... Just starting and taking off and hammering it isn't good for the turbo.

Sorry to hear about that, maybe I'm lucky, I'm on the original turbo with close to 100k miles and have been pushing 22 to 23 psi since about 30k miles.

The dealership just called me back, comfirmed that the turbo is gone again. Need to know fight with check to have it covered even though the 1 year warranty is up. The dealership said that it shouldn't have failed in just two years. I have the worst luck....ugh

If I were you, I would make sure that the BPV solenoid isn't causing any issues, and possibly stick an aftermarket recirculating BPV on the car as soon as the turbo is replaced. I do not trust the factory BPV because It's plastic, and uses a rubber diaphragm.

Going off of what Natesriv said, I would check your oil frequently to make sure you aren't running low on oil. Maybe hook up an oil pressure gauge to make sure you're getting adequate pressure through the system. I would also hook up a boost gauge to make sure the turbo is building pressure correctly.

Oil is fine, not burning what so ever. I am still waiting on Chevy to see if they are going to replace it or not. It's going on 4 days now with multiple calls to Chevy and the woman handling my case is never around. Getting really annoyed, at this point.

Whether the dealership replaces the turbo or not you still need to figure out what the underlying issue is. Chances are the turbo dying the second time around is not "bad luck" but something else that is being overlooked. I work in a high performance shop and I've seen many customers replace pistons over and over again after melting them down without going after what is actually causing it to melt down.

I remember seeing a video somewhere on youtube awhile back talking about the oil feed line on a turbo cruze getting clogged and taking out the turbo. Maybe worth having them check.

Oddly enough, They actually tell you to replace the oil feed/return lines every time you replace the turbo or remove it for service on these cars. Those o-ring gaskets are one time use and I guess you can't just get the stupid o-rings separately.

Also JayL, make damn sure you are using full synthetic in this engine because of the turbocharger. Conventional oil can't holdup to the stress that a forced induction vehicle produces and will cause damage to the engine and turbo.

Have you checked that this isn't a pcv issue causing to premature turbo failure? If you take the pcv hose off the top of the IM do you see the orange pcv nipple present? If not that can cause issues and you may notice oil residue in the turbo inlet. Go long enough and it can lead to turbo issues.

Beyond that I would second the oil and coolant feed lines should be replaced when swapping to a new turbo. You already have it out so not sure why chevy would skimp on replacing them as well (oil line replacement is recommended by chevy even).

How many miles do you have? Power train is good 5 yrs / 100k mi, and chance your under both?

I had my turbo go the other week, and I was at 50k miles... I posted pics of the bypass valve and housing and the housing is cracked all the way around... and mines a 2014 auto.

Do you know if they replaced any lines or only the turbo? I'm at 50k now on my 2013 and have probably a year before by 5yr powertrain warranty runs out. I don't wish any problem on my car but at this point I'd rather it fail now under GM's warranty then later under CarMax's warranty

Well looking at my paper from the dealership.. it looks like they did replace the lines.. i think thats the 2 pipes and seals that are showing.. I could be wrong though...

I just had mine replaced under GMPP warranty for wastegate and bov failure.. being proactive I checked to see if the pcv nipple is still intact in the intake manifold and it is missing (see pic).

Going to check my warranty and see if it's covered, if not I think I saw Greg was selling a couple but I will also try the Cruze fix I found on my current one as well.

I have a feeling it attributed to the turbo failure but also when the cam cover suicide disk failed last year as well.

2012 with 64k miles ATM.

Old turbo was only getting to 5 - 6 psi of boost. New one between 17 - 19 psi so far.

Are you running the correct oil filter for your brand of oil filter housing?

That little PCV nipple is hard to spot. It's towards the firewall. Mine was covered in crud this time. I had to use q-tips to try and wipe the gunk off to see it. Your manifolds PCV port looks a lot cleaner than mine.

$80 for the CRUZE forum kit + $60 for the BNR TB Spacer. Then again I was looking at another manifold. A clean one I can build from. My only question would be why they ran the hose and PCV valve under the manifold. I would like it on top possibly tee'd into the PCV hose to the turbo. Then Tee'd into the vacuum port behind the throttle body, without the need for a TB spacer.

I just noticed the O-Rings on my PCV hose were busted. Needs a new one. 40,000 miles.
The hose has a one way valve inside of it. I tried blowing air from the turbo side to the intake side and it was blocked. Then i tried from the intake side to the turbo side and the air was able to flow through, but was somewhat restricted.

Yup, cleaned it off the same way (used up four q-tips both sides to get it that clean in there). Going to check again when I get home and looks like that part is covered under the GMPP MG plan I have. Not sure how much of a fight it going to be to get them to replace it sense no CEL and code atm.

I would think that since the IM / pcv is covered under powertrain an extended powertrain should still cover it. That IM is a $270 part, no small change, so fight if you need to make sure it's covered!

I replaced the IM without using GM warranty mainly because I wanted to port the manifold. At the time I also didn't feel like dealing with GM to replace it then still have to remove it myself to port it. Now, if the orange pcv fails again I'll warranty it and skip the porting.

I didn't replace the pcv hose to the turbo though so I'll need to check if that one way valve is still functioning correctly at the turbo inlet side.

Did a recheck last weekend and the orange pcv is still there after 5k miles and 3 months:
