Turbo whine started after the service washed the engine

Hi. The service said they carbon cleaned the engine and washed the engine in annual maintenance. After the service I noticed this turbo whine sound. The service says this sound is normal. It wasn't there before the maintenance. They ripped out and reattached the hoses, tried a different turbo solenoid valve but the sound is still there. What can I do? What is your suggestions? Thanks.

It's 1.3 CDTI, a common-rail turbo diesel engine. Developed in Fiat - Opel partnership. Engine block is same with the Fiat multijet engine. Sonic was the only Chevrolet model that offers it but Opel used it on most models.

*Update on issue: I noticed the service didn't closed the air filter box properly. They even forgot to change the air filter. But the sound didn't gone after everything is in order. I did 400 miles in that situtation, turbo has damaged I think. I complained them to the Opel, Opel said the sound is normal but it is absolutely not. I'm gonna sue.

usually a whine and im using my experience with turbo diesel engines is caused by air leak or blowby, in most cases it was damage to a intercooler pipe causing a hose to incorrectly seal or a loose clamp. this was everything from Mercedes to caterpillar to kubota machinery... cant see this being much different.. just a thought..

since majority of us dont have experience with anything more then a sonic with a gas..

but that sound dose not sound uncommon just louder then even i believe it should be.. question is how it sounds under load driving.. but.... as follows common causes

• Boost/air/vacuum leak – either on your engine intake, or your intercooler
• Compressor wheel damage
• Split hoses
• Over boosting (potentially caused by a wastegate fault) or poor remap


or since you said it was washed it could be the accessory drive belts with some crap on them slipping or such or alternator noise or some other component when revved thats much located on that side..

Love to see there is a diesel. For the noise, Need more info. Spooling noise? air leak? audio would help. But honestly I would not be too worried about it as long as your car has full power.

It's in full power now but some people say this might be an early indicator before it losing power. The second Opel service I took the car said turbo can be damaged with dirty air. It might be because of the first Opel service's fault(they forgot to change the air filter and close the filter box). I said this to the Opel customer care, it's still in process. Chevrolet shutted down the business in Europe. Opel services are authorized to service the Chevrolets. GM sold Opel to the Peugeot, Opel's new engineered cars uses Peugeot engines but Opel still service the Chevrolets.

After the second service realigned some hoses, the sound is transformed to this:



Sounds like it has more delay after when I take my foot of the gas now and it's not noticeable like before.

that sound better.. when letting off it bleeds boost back into the system.. pressure has to go somewere right? that sounds like normal blowoff ..
