Back in early May, I was on my way to work in my 2008 Cobalt. As I was taking an exit ramp to merge onto the next highway, a beautiful fox decided it was the perfect moment to cross the road. I hit said fox and destroyed my radiator, ac condenser, and bent the subframe on the drivers side. I continued on to work as the temp slowly started to climb. “A slow leak, I can live with that,” I thought as I drove along. 15 minutes later, I arrive at work, park and spend the next 8 hours, naïvely, hoping for the best. After work, I buy myself 2 gallons of distilled water, and make my way to the car. This is when I realize the extent of the damage. I got down on all fours and took a peak at the chaos. The radiator and condenser are bent 45 degrees in towards the motor, and the subframe is bent almost perpendicular with the road. “Maybe it’ll hold long enough to get home,” I thought as the water I poured in flowed right back out the bottom of the radiator. One insurance claim later I’m left with more money than I would have thought and a need for a fun daily. In the mean time, I attempted to drive the “race car” (a b20b swapped EF hatch) to work until I found a replacement daily. When I say in the mean time, I mean the next day, I drive the EF to work only to stretch my brand new clutch cable and am stranded at work yet again. I now have had two cars towed out of my work parking lot in 24 hours. I then moved to borrowing my friends 99 ford ranger that he has been using for carpentry side jobs and driving back and forth from Richmond to JMU. A solid truck, but it was BEAT to say the least. After multiple failed searches online, a few trips to my local Chevy dealer, it was time! I’d built very own custom Sonic RS and the dealer put my order in! I get a call the next day informing me that ordering it wouldn’t be possible because it was too close to the end of the model year, so Chevy was taking special orders anymore. My dreams were dashed and it was back to the drawing board. Out of desperation, I picked up a 03 Accord from a friend so I could return the ranger after a few weeks of borrowing it. Another week went by as I continued my autotrader, carmax, Craigslist searches until FINALLY I found one that was close enough to what I had built online. I told myself, “self, you should call that dealership right now and ask about it” so I procrastinated until the next morning and then pulled the trigger. The salesman was great, made the whole thing super easy and set me up with an appointment two days later. That Saturday morning, myself and my lovely girlfriend made the trip from RVA down to Raleigh and brought it home! A 2019 Sonic RS 6 speed manual with all the amenities minus the leather seats!
TLDR; wrecked my first car I got out of high school and broke my race car in the span of 24 hours. Hello Sonic RS!
