What the crap is that in my intake?

So I went to install a K&N high flow filter into my intake and found this material in there. It's on the top cover opposite the tube leading to the throttle body. I'm guessing, other than just sitting there not looking pretty*, it's probably just dampening noise from the intake. If anyone has any idea what it's really doing there please let me know. If my guess is right then I'll take it out and see if I notice a change in sound.

*not that it matters at all 'cause you can't see it anyway

You're talking about that white square on the top corner. It's likely there to redirect airflow into your intake pipe that runs to your engine.

I haven't seen it yet but it could be there to smooth airflow going to the MAF, quite a resonance that the average drive does not want, direct airflow, etc etc. GM spends a lot of time and money designing everything on these cars with purpose. I will pop mine back off to take a look at it, hopefully by Chirstmas it wont matter anymore anyway. I am now stuck between the ZZP intake and DDM Works intake, love the looks of the ZZP and the heat shield of the DDM.

It has absolutely nothing to do with smoothing airflow or noise abatement.

It's a hydrocarbon absorber. It catches hydrocarbons in the incoming air. For example, when you are in bumper to bumper traffic, it catches the unburned hydrocarbons from the vehicle in front of you. Consider it a pre pre pre catalytic converter.

Not too much changed in the "through you in the back of the seat" department. I get a little more engine noise (which I like) and I noticed when I'm not in gear and I rev the engine, the rpm's shoot up quicker than with the stock filter. So the engine obviously can breath better. But, if you were to dyno the car before and after, I'd bet there would only be like a 5-15hp difference.

i removed the filter. it does dampen sound slightly even though thats not its primary function. i'll be doing my intake this weekend.

are you modding the stock air box or getting a full setup like the zzp, injen or ddm?

Swapping the filter got you that many extra horses??

i will be modding my Stock intake. I want it to have the ram air setup with a K&N filter. i'm betting it will flow just as good as a ZZP or Ingen

Be careful modding the stock intake, the MAF sensor on these cars is very sensitive to turbulence ahead of it.

If you have a scan gauge, watch your long and short term fuel trims to see if they go really positive or negative after changing the filter to make sure you are not causing any turbulence.

what difference would adding a K&N filter to a stock airbox VS. a "cold air" intake like the ingen or ZZp affect the turbulance.
