Whoosh / Hissing sound

Is it normal to have a whoosh / hissing sound? Almost like a belt slipping but not as high pitched.
I hear it at low speeds occasionally. I thought it might be the BOV. Can you hear it. Its seems to last for about 2-3 seconds.

What is the sound driectly tied to? Engine RPM, engine load, speed, etc?


Also, have you ever owned a turbo car before?

It seems tied to RPM, probably around 2k. Definitely not load or speed. The car has around 7,700 miles.

I have not owned a turbo car, last 3 cars have been LS1 & LS6's.
Come to think of it, my wifes SUV was a turbo diesel.

I'll have to check on mine, it's bone stock too. I definately notice some more intake noise compare to every N/A car I've owned before.

If there is no CEL I wouldbt be to worried, I've never heard of these cars slipping belts at all at any mileage, and the 1.4 uses a chain drive for timing.

Definitely not a belt slipping, just using the analogy to describe the sound.
I am taking it in for an oil change next week. I'll ask them, but you know it won't make the noise for them.

My rs has a tune intake and a bov it makes all kinds of turbo noises now haha...i recall when it was stock for a week i didnt hear too much noise then again im deaf

Even a stock intake will make a slight whoosh noise under boost. That comes in just before 2000 rpm so it could very well be the noise you hear. Next time you hear the noise get off the throttle at that same RPM and see if it goes away (if you're driving an automatic it could be challenging to seperate engine load from RPM).

If it's only when you are accelerating it's a normal sound for a turbo car.

I heard a slight whoosh/hiss at any RPM after letting off the throttle, it was louder after adding an intake. If that's the noise you hear it's the BPV dumping boost (if it didn't the turbo wouldn't live very long).

After adding an intake I would start to hear a hissing/sucking noise once boost began to build any time i was kinda hard on the throttle

I notice witg the windows up i can hear the turbo /intake it at first sounded odd but its obviously just turbo boosting i also noticed after a tune intake and atmospheric bov sometimes witg light revving the turbo will bark.. its crazy how much loudrr they are with minor mods

sometimes with my intake (don't remember much about the SAB) when I'm barely giving any gas at any speed, hisses louder than when I get on it. I'm guessing it's normal turbo noises you're hearing.

Careful about using the term turbo bark loosely. Turbo bark is very bad. You don't want to be experiencing it. Bark will happen at surge..... When a compressor wheel is trying to force more air than the cylinders are ready to accept, the compressor will surge, suddenly and violently stop and start, causing what is referred to as bark.

Dealer said its normal turbo sounds.
It was just odd to me because certain times its louder than others.

Isn't turbo bark what happens with your BOV freezes shut in winter and the compressed air has nowhere to go when you close the throttle except back out the way it came in?

That scenario is usually called "flutter". It is compressor stall with little pressure on the turbine side and is less destructive than "bark" or the surge that happens when you stall a compressor with the turbine under heavy load.

None of it is any good for the bearings but my friend ran an 87 GLHS without a BOV for YEARS without fault. So a little flutter doesn't scare me.
