I have 17X7.5 .40 rims on a lowered Sonic with no issues.
It is not just the width of the rim, but also of the tire. I have 225/45s and the tire is 9 inches wide by measurement.
It looks like there is about a quarter inch clearance on each side for a total of half an inch. I suspect a 235 w/ same rim could fit if I was not lowered, and might even tho lowered but right now do not need to find out.
I believe a 17" rim is ideal for readily available and affordable needs. The rim will weigh 17 to 20 pounds so adding the weight of the tire one will be close to OEM thus will not be adding extra stress to suspension or drivetrain.
