Your key fob frequency

Hi all,

With the key fob "key" in the open position I see a frequency of "315 MHZ" molded into the plastic. I tuned my scanner to 315 MHZ and can clearly hear the signal when I press the lock button.
I am wondering, is everyone's frequency 315 MHZ?

After a little research it seems most cars use 315 MHz. Also many if not most garage doors use it also.

We've been having a rash of keyless entry robberies on my block. Apparently there is a thief with a device that can communicate universally with modern alarms. We've had four cars with alarms, opened and rummaged through in the last 2 weeks.

Kind of takes all of the comfort out of having an alarm. Just locking the doors doesn't help, because the electronic "unlock" can still be triggered.

About Preloader's mention of car break ins.
If it were my neighborhood I would tune my rf scanner to the key fob frequency and maybe connect it to my outside "ham" antenna. I would notice the normal amount of "chirps" from car key fobs and garage door openers. Then, if I heard abnormal chirping from a bad guy's scanning codes to break in I could take appropriate action.

A 2 farad capacitor at about 24V connected to the door handle and earth would give them one hell of a surprise when they tried to open the door. 24V hurts more than you might think.

LOL ya we use to do that in tech school... charge up condensers and leave them on the table... LOL or hand them to the parts people... hehe aahhh the good ole days....

I did a little research on this a while ago. It's almost all 315Mhz for US and 433Mhz for UK. But they transmit a "key" and it changes. If you want to mess up your FOB for a while, be out of range and press it about 257 times. It will get out of sync with your car. So, pressing the buttons for the heck of it isn't a great idea.

It's pretty hard to capture the key codes, but jamming them? Not so much. LOTS of thefts that way.

I HATE the person that designed the chirping alarms. I get wicked headaches from high pitched sounds. There's a name for it, but no cure except avoidance. I sleep days just to avoid daily noise.

Back to the FOB, frequency and Security.... SO, around Christmas time, check your doors by hand, or be sure you hear the "Locked" sound (or in my case, watch the headlights). A lot of thieves jam in parking lots waiting to reap the rewards. They already know how, it's the good people that are usually clueless.
