Zzp exhaust!

Question about the zzp exhaust parts. Does the catback for the 1.4 come with the secondary cat section? On there site they list all 4 "sections of the exhaust" they can be purchased separately. When you order the catback section it asks you if you want the secondary cat or cat delete. I am assuming this is the same as the cat delete pipe "exhaust section 3" that they sell separately as well. I have called and e-mailed, their customer service is among the worst I have ever seen.

I want to replace from/including mid pipe back. I need to know if ordering the mid pipe and catback include everything I need or do I have order the high flow secondary cat section as well.

The ZZP catback is the following

- Second cat (high flow or straight pipe)
- Res or straight pipe
- muffler or no muffler
- and tip

So yes if you purchase the midpipe and the catback you would be set and only be missing the downpipe to complete the exhaust.

It's okay I emailed back and forth with them about the kind of setup I want and it required a bit of patience but got the answer I wanted

OK, dumb question - doesn't the 2ndary cat have to be in place for emissions reasons? I realize some states like maybe Alabama or something are not very strict but in most cases isn't that going to make it tough to pass emissions? In many places they visually look for the cats AFAIK.

In VA they plug in the OBDII for late models. No codes, pass. When a cat is required, they don't know how many it came with, so just one is fine.

On a side note... the cat in the back is a bit of a waste.. Cat needs to get hot to work, and the farther away from the motor it is, the cooler it will be.

Typically they also plug in a sniffer in the exhaust and run the RPM up for a bit to get a reading. Not saying it wouldn't pass, but its more than ODBII codes. Esp. in CA, but luckily I'm in TX. Grew up in VA.

It depends on where you are in NY, In my county there are minimal emissions. Go down one county into (Westchester,NYC) and that all changes.

1st Cat (downpipe 1.4 or header 1.8) clears most of the raw exhaust and the 2nd Cat simply clears up what's left over, that's why there isn't an O2 sensor after this one.

I highly advise looking into if you're located in an address where you will need to pass emissions. Oregon has a handy dandy address locator which you simply input your address and it displays whether you needs to pass emissions or not. Luckily for me, I'm outside of that so I can literally dump all the exhaust and still get my stickers for my car

For me I'd like to clean, I like clean air and power is still good just with tune, however for sound looking at the zzp catback.

I managed an emission testing facility in Washington State for over eight years, a lot has changed since I left in 1999, by the time I left they hadn't yet started plugging into the OBDII port but had been performing the dyno test for a few years.

At the time in Washington State at least, they had reference books listing all the required components for all vehicles going back to 1968 so if there's supposed to be two cats and they only find one, you may have an issue.

Also, if you have a CEL and clear the code around the corner from the testing facility you will likely fail because the ECM will have a status of Not Ready. After clearing codes it takes a few key cycles and drive time for the system to report a status of Ready but that will also make any codes reappear.

Good points, and didn't realize there was a equip book. As others have pointed out, it can vary county by county. I live in Fairfax, Va, and they require cats. They plug into the OBDII, and still do a quick dyno run, but no sniffer on the late models (OBDII), OBDI and pre ECM get the probe.

ECM will take about 25 miles of driving after a reset. A good example would be if you have been driving around without a thermostat. If the car never reaches normal operating temps, it'll think it still in warm up mode.. which can cause all kinds of problems for cats and excessive fuel use.

For all those that want to do the delete cats, just consider that it's not the 1970's cats of old. The high flow cats are a honeycomb straight through type, and would tone down the sound very little. Clean air is a good thing. I'm going with both cats for my system.

install help!

I just got the midpipe and catback from zzp on and I have a lot of rattling on start up and shut off and some at idle. it is very loud any typical areas it might be hitting?

nevermind I got it. coupling was too close to sway bar!

You will notice the ZZP exhaust gets deeper with age. I have been running mine for over 40,000 miles now with ZERO issues. Was one of the cleanest fits I have done.

just drove it for about 20 miles and it sounds great, all seems good for now.
