The tread on the all-season OEM tires isn't supposed to crack in cold weather. It is the summer only performance OEM tires that have that tendency. You must have some extreme weather conditions where you live.

OEM Hankooks are terrible in the winter!
The OEM Hankooks deliver unacceptable performance in the snow. We replaced them with Firestone Winterforce tires and are quite happy with the result.
Call us optimistic, but we are looking at putting the OEM Hankooks back on soon and are considering getting a second set of rims, per the posting below I put on WTB.
Please let us know if you can get us into a set of rims inexpensively...

In Rochester NY, am looking for a second set of rims to mount either the LT's Stock Hankook tires on, or our Firestone Winterforce 195/65R15 tires on. Prefer TPMS but not mandatory here per NYS regulations.
In Rochester you NEED to use something other than those Stock Hankook tires when it gets snowy! The Winterforce tires made it much better this season.

You replaced a cheap all season with a winter tire, did you expect a different result? All seasons are just that. They are not great in any one condition, but will be okay in most. That is how they have always been.

Some basic information here. The winterforce is designed for specific driving conditions, outside of those and it begins to be a really bad tire choice. Operating standard all season tires in temps below about 40* and in the snow and ice is outside of the range that they function decently in. The Hankook left the factory with about 9.5/32" of tread depth and fairly small gaps between tread blocks without an ability to really keep clear of buildup. The Firestone left the factory with 12/32" tread depth, fairly open tread design and much more agressive tread pattern. Is anyone really shocked that it works better??

We don't plan to use Winterforce tires outside their designed application, we want to keep them in good shape for next winter. That's why we plan to put the OEM Hankooks back on soon.
My feeling is Winter "Snow Tires" work best the day you get them and performance deteriorates from then on. Summer tires can actually improve with wear, at least for emergency braking in good dry conditions, rain is a different matter. We made the investment in Winter tires because the OEM Hankooks provided unacceptable winter performance.
