There is nothing wrong with the 1.8

Believe it or not when I bought my 1.8 I didn't even know they made a turbo model. I didn't buy it for speed I bought it because I liked the look and price.

Ignorance was surely blissful until I stumbled upon these forums and realized I could a had a turbo. Oh well, my situation was pretty unique and I'm just happy to have my car.

I'll continue customizing it to my liking , heck one day I may even put a turbo graphic on it and just start lying to myself eventually I'll start to believe my own lies and I'll be convinced I have the turbo.

you say that you want to see the 1.8 beat the turbo. the turbo option is like what? $700 more. it would take the N/A more than 700 worth of upgrades to hang methinks.

I don't know where everybody is seeing this $700 upgrade for the 1.4L turbo. Maybe I went to the wrong car dealer but if you INCLUDED tax out the door if I would have gone from a 1.8L sedan to the 1.4L Turbo hatchback it would have been an extra $2000 - $3000+. Idk maybe everybody finds these special $700+ upgraded engines at the car dealer I don't know about.

OK I'm getting a little pissed off. Yes the 1.4 has a turbo. Oh well there is still nothing wrong with the 1.8.... u could use a 100 different excesses . And there argument boils down to this.. well it Dont have a turbo .... no $hit sherlok. Not all engine need a turbo. Not all people like the turbo.. ( me being one of them). The second argument is the trimming belt. My honda had 290k on it when I sold it on the original belt...... its not a big deal... ur little 1.4 might not even see 100k Cuz u keep beating the $hit out of them.. there is one thing and only one thing I like about the turbo. And its the m32 transmission. That is the only reason I would buy a turbo sonic ( other then if they had a as version). I'm getting ready to turn 12k and my friends is almost at 30k. And guess what 0 problem what so ever. From a performance stand point yes turbo. But it is not needed. Mine will still do 125 stock.QUOTE]

Mosy modernengines I've worked on are interference fit. Even a fair amount of 90s sonics are interference, a buddies 92 civic sumn sumn (dont remember engine or ecact model) anyway belt broke at somewhere arounf 120k mi and the engine got totaled. #2 piston and valves went good bye

The 1.4 isn't better because it is more powerful, but because it is less powerful. 99% of the time even a crazed onramp jackrabbit like me doesn't need much power; why lug around a bigger engine burning more gas when you are barely using a third of the pedal. The turbocharger isn't there to make it more powerful than the 1.8, it's there to make the tiny engine big enough on demand.

Eventually there will be a turbo kit for the 1.8.. But the 1.4 will always be the smaller more economical engine.

I have had my share in hating on the turbos, but to be honest they are still some quick little cars. Mods or not, the chassis alone is something that fits the turbo well. I have the stock 1.8 but I bought it for that reason. I feel that people who wanted some more torque and speed bought the turbos, honestly if money wasn't an option for any of us, I highly doubt we would all be here. Everyone that gets their sonics, gets them for different reasons, but for the price, the turbo is a great little ride to mod. No reason to hate on them, just as there is no reason to hate the 1.8 for being slow. It is supposed to be slow, if we wanted fast, we would have bought the turbo or an entire different car all together.

also, I'm pretty sure that the 1.4t and 1.8 are very similar in price to manufacture. they offer the 1.4t to be able to charge the premium for it

If you were going to buy an LT or LTZ then going from 1.8 to 1.4T costs 700, if you were going to get the LS it's 1000 more. With tax maybe that's 2K... but 3000?

The 1.8 is a decent 4 banger. I had a Saturn Astra prior to the Sonic (Same 1.8 in the Sonic I'd imagine)

Had only 2 issues ever 1 was the cam angle sensors were know to go bad. Replaced under warranty and a wheel sensor also replaced under warranty.


I went with the 1.4t figured we may as well have 3 turbo cars in the family

EVO IX and prior have timing belts after you've done a couple you get pretty quick at doing em so no big deal.

If you order the carit may only be an extra $700. I needed a car that day and had an option of the one I have, a few turbo/automatic, or a fully loaded LTZ turbo/6mt. Would have been a whole lot more than $700 to get the turbo.

I like the 1.8 so far. it is capable of returning very good economy, and is not entirely to slow. After driving cars with 150hp/155tq for years I had to adjust to a lower power engine, but it hasnt been that bad.

If I really wanted to get adventurous I would find myself a W41 to swap in. Still pull off mid 30s for economy on the highway, but have 190hp on tap in a completely stock engine. Might be a 2.3L and from the early 90's, but it is one of my favorite engines.

Get to know a local speed shop and be willing to drop the cash to be "the first" and you can have both of the options you'd like to see. Especially if you come on here and show an interest in the parts big enough to entice a company to go into R&D on the product. Or, like the TTR transmission mount, start a thread in a supporting vendor to try and gain enough interest to start developing a product.
