"tire learn" on menu

okay so i have tried a few times to play with the setting on the turn signal lever, and it brings up "tire learn" and when i hit select it does nothing, and if i hold it the horn goes off and the lights all flash. anyone else experiencing this or know what i'm doing wrong?

The TPMS sensor matching process is:

1. Set the parking brake.

2. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN with the engine off.

3. Use the MENU button to select the Vehicle Information menu in the Driver Information Center (DIC).

4. Use the thumbwheel to scroll to the Tire Pressure Learn menu item screen.

5. Press and hold the SET/CLR button to begin the sensor matching process.

6. The horn sounds twice to signal the receiver is in relearn mode and the TIRE LEARN message displays on the DIC screen.

7. Start with the driver side front tire.

8. Place the relearn tool against the tire sidewall, near the valve stem. Then press the button to activate the TPMS sensor. A horn chirp confirms that the
sensor identification code has been matched to this tire and wheel position.

9. Proceed to the passenger side front tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 8.

10. Proceed to the passenger side rear tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 8.

11. Proceed to the driver side rear tire, and repeat the procedure in Step 8. The horn sounds two times to indicate the sensor identification code has
been matched to the driver side rear tire, and the TPMS sensor matching process is no longer active. The TIRE LEARN message on the DIC display screen goes off.

12. Turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF.

13. Set all four tires to the recommended air pressure level as indicated on the Tire and Loading Information label.

Let me grab my relearn tool..., I would think that the dealer would set it during pre-inspection before delivery wouldn't you.?
I wonder if the low tire pressure monitor alert light comes on if it is not "learned?
I would also hope the dealer would set it or reset it upon our first service visit.
My wife insists on me overinflating by 2-3 lbs, because the tires look low!
And it feels better while driving. And the dealer of course lowers it to spec during servicing! That was on our 2009 Aveo LT5 and 2003 Sunfire GT.

that's what i was thinking, well first thought was "did they forget to give me one of those" in a panic state, then i realized HAHA yeah right that sounds expensive I'm assuming thats something you have to purchase or dealership (I just woke up, slow thinking process for now lol)

My local Discount Tire re-learned all my tires for free if/when I ask.

On my last car I was able to view the Tire Pressure when scrolling through the dash. Is this sonic not set up for this because I cannot view the tire pressure except through the on star app on my phone..

No, it is not. You have to remember the Sonic is an entry level low priced car. Features like being able to view tire pressures aren't necessary, and were omitted to save every dollar possible on the price. As you mentioned, there are apps available that allow what you are after.

If this isn't posted anywhere else, the "relearn tool" is a 50 dollar magnet on a stick. You can use pretty much any strong magnet like from a speaker, or hard disk... etc.

That is unless the tool has changed from what the Cobalts and Corvettes etc were using? Guess I could go out and try tomorrow

The learn tool tells the car which tire is which like when you rotate your tires . Take the left rear and put it on the right front . The car cant tell the difference by its self you need to tell it where that tire is . Thats all the learn tool does as far as I know .

I was wondering if instead of using a re-learn tool; adding or reducing air pressure in each tire until the horn sounds in the same sequence as using the re-learn tool? Then adjusting the tires to the recommended pressure. This is the way I do the re-learn process on my 2009 Silverado. I have not tried it on my Sonic yet, but possibly may work.

I, too would like to know. I went to a local shop that 'Specializes in Customer Satisfaction' and the guy was a total a-hole. He told me I'd have to make an appointment and that it would 'be pricey'.. It would have taken me 2 minutes to do it if he would have let me borrow the tool. My car was in plain sight about 30 feet from the desk.

I was told that the magnet thing and the raising and lowering pressure thing wouldn't work on 2012 and later cars. I never tried... just bought the tool and went for it.

I would not be suprised if you simply reset the tire learn with the engine on and then drove a few miles to calibrate the sensor positions.

My question is why do you have to do this anyway? I rotated mine and didn't reset them.

Good question, the reality is unless you use ONstar it isn't necessary in the least. and even then It's so the tire psi on the app/service are reported for the correct tire position. All the relearn does is set the computer to relearn where each sensor is so the RF wheel reports its a RF wheel and so on.

When you swap wheels the sensors obviously change location. They keep reporting but now the computer is associating them with the wrong position. So let's say the RR tire goes low after a rotate, the comp will display it as a low LF since that was It's last known location.

On the sonic the only way you're getting tire specific pressures is if you use ONstar. Otherwise a single dummy light comes on saying "A TIRE" is low but not which tire. So in the end it makes little difference.

And for those that don't know any better please check all the tire psi before inflating the one you think is low.
