Even if a lot of Euro cars get better MPG, what cost are they paying per gallon?
Something tells me the difference in MPG doesn't make up for the $8-9 per gallon vs our $3.60-4.00 (current prices in NJ).
So take your pick, no matter what the costs or reasonings are or if its even fair (life is never fair). You want weaker slowler cars getting a little better miles per gallon while paying twice the price for your fuel? Or do you want what you have now.

It seems to me that there are already a number of fairly strict European exhaust regulations. They'd likely not be as strong as California, but probably stronger than just about anywhere else in the US or Canada.
I think your second piece is important though. We do seem to be at a time where we'll all trade some space and comfort for some MPGs, but not everyone is willing to. The fact the EV1 is a 2 seater means it would have likely had the same lukewarm reception as the original Honda Insight.
I mean, this is the Sonic Owners forum, not the Escalade forum.
Scary piece they mentioned in the doc was that in the mid 90s, you could get a $4k tax credit for an electric car, or write off $100k worth of Hummer for tax purposes. Seriously?
Unfortunately, the electric car hasn't seemed to have advanced much in the last 20 years - you have to wonder if all the effort being put into the hydrogen fuel cell could have been used better in developing Li-ion tech for cars?

Last I checked into things the strict emissions they have are for different emissions than the limits we have here. Kinda like the diesel emissions they have. Might pass there, but would fail emissions testing here.
How many of the cars getting great economy over there would actually be willingly driven by people here? I dont mind a small efficient car, but many people would not be willing to settle for a small car.

The gas price to MPG argument between U.S and Eurpoe is null. Fuel effecient cars do not have a direct impact on fuel prices (or any impact), where as high gas prices usually has an effect on higher MPG cars.
Our emmision stand point is F*cking retarded. Lots of posturing and talk about CO2 emissions.. seriously it should be of secondary concern, find ways to eliminate NOx emmisions and CO2 and HC emmisions start to become easily and cheaply controlled and MPGs will improve.
Also wasn't the EV1 a four door, four seater? I haven't seen the movie in many years but I thought I recalled the vehicle being so impressive in part because it was practical (range not withstanding)

Note: Do not ever compare US and Euro advertised mpg numbers. Beside the more obvious difference in the capacity of a "gallon"... The way the US' EPA calculates mileage is different than the way the European equivalent does it. The driving course and rigor set in the dynamometer is different. The fuel types used are different.

Opticon- good point! I think they can still be compared but conversions must be made to make it apples to apples. Real world MPGs between here and there would work if converted. Sticker probably not so much because as you mentioned different methods to get sticker MPG.
