I think that the torque ratings are little more than an indication of what engines a particular transmission has been paired with. I don't believe that the ratings are a very accurate indication of what a transmission can handle so such as what it has been proven to handle.
Something like that. I don't mean to imply that it necessarily is underrated, only that it might be as a result of the application.
There's always the counter that it was chosen for the application as a result of its low rating.
I guess I prefer to think that it is some combination of the two, and there must be some wiggle room. A little meat left on the bone.
In any event, I don't think that a header is going to produce F17 shattering torque. That's what the turbo kit is for.

hmmm... well I mean, just an excuse to upgrade plus I watch these videos of sonic race cars which surprisingly a few are 1.8 5spd and they are getting the living poop kicked out of them.. and theyre fine

I wouldn't be concerned with the added Torque from a header damaging the trans. It's a very smooth power delivery, unlike say a 50 shot of Nitrous or even the quick onset of tq from a turbo.
The way I see it is headers are analogous to tightening a bolt with a wrench and NOS is like hitting the same bolt with an Impact.
Because of the smooth delivery the trans/drivetrain won't be beat up that bad.

The B-spec cars are actually making less power than stock thou :sadbanana:
Also, keep in mind that the M32 is only rated for 200NM (148 ft-lb). Only time will tell, but they seem to be holding up pretty well to engine torque produced by the impact wrench that we call a tuned and modded 1.4.
I'm sure that increased torque must have some effect on the long-term durability of any transmission, but as long as that torque is applied judiciously, it should still last for quite some time.

Here is another point about the GM trans ratings. The F23 in my 02 Z24 was rated at a maximum of 175 FT-Lbs input torque. Engine output was 155 ft-lbs. The GMPP S/C kit that was offered and did not void the warranty was claimed to add 40hp and 35 ft-lbs. I am no genius but 155+35 is more than 175.
