Plasti Dip'd The RS

Just did the rims yesterday and might I say that they turned out great! First time ever doing it and it's literally dummy proof for those of you who haven't tried it or are too nervous to do it! Cost me only $13.06 after tax for the 2 cans of Plasti Dip. I was able to do 3 coats with leftovers in the cans, took about an hour and a half total, includes dry time!

Thinking about doing it to mine. I do have a few questions. 1) Did you use any glossifier or just the color? 2) What was the prep steps you used? 3) How long did it take to do from start to finish? Thanks

As of now there is no glossifier on it, I'm still debating whether or not I want to do it. I kinda like the Matte Black look...

To prep it, I just used Windex and some Costco paper towels! Lol Spent about 5-10 minutes cleaning each rim. That was the hardest part! I recommend if you do it this way though that you also have a air spray can handy to get off the little extra pieces of lint/dust. I just blew it all away and got light headed every time instead! After that, I took a garbage bag, cut a long line down it, then wrapped it around the brakes/caliper parts, worked great! No over spray anywhere! Even if there was, the Plasti Dip just rubs right off...

I'd say total time including prep from start to finish was maybe 2-2 1/2 hours. Time flew by though, felt like way less!

One thing I also definitely recommend is to get the spray nozzle attachment to the Plasti Dip can! My fingers and for arms were pretty sore afterwards from spraying so much! Trust me, you'll want it!

I also left the center Chevy caps on the wheels while I sprayed. After the 3 coats were done, 10 minutes dry time between coats, the center cap plasti dip just peels off with a perfect round cut of the cap! For the green air cap, I just wrapped a piece of tape around it, then took it off afterwards...

Word to the wise, you might wanna spend another $13 and double up the amount of plasti dip on your rims....trust me 6 coats is much much easier to remove if you ever want to than 3 coats. Did my entire f250 7.3L matte black with 6 coats and it was super easy to remove. One of my friends did 3 coats on his car and it took 10 hours to remove it.

When i put the last remaining coats on i will be removing the wheels possibly one at a time since i don't have a lift to take all off at the same time. I'm not sure how many cans i will need to get in order to have enough coats for even coverage. Any input would help.

I've heard people doing 2-3 light coats with 1-2 cans and saying it turned out bad. I used 4 whole cans on mine and did about 5 -7 nice thick coats and they are holding up great. I even rubbed a curb in the in the drive thru other day and just scratched the DIP didn't lift it or anything.

If it is something you want to last and need to be redone soon take your time clean wheels proper and put down as many coats as you can to build it up.

I like that information as I am going to dip my wheels this weekend. In the layout stage right now. Pics to follow on different thread.

Definitely more and heavier layers if you want longevity. I did all of my cladding on a previous vehicle and it lasted a year before places started to wear.

When i did mine I didn't put enough layers on .. it didn't last a year and its very had to remove since i didn't put in on think enough.. I am in the middle of redoing mine but using real paint this time since i like how it turned out.

Im a huge fan of plastidip, all of my badges and my rims are done flat black and Ive seen some pretty cool colors out there too!
