warning for 6 speed manual transmission!

Dealer are being given say on when to have gear oil changed per chevy customer service rep. Mu local dealer is saying 30,000 and the next closest location says no later then 60,000. Oil is 70W and a dealer item only at $30.00 a quart. 2.5 quarts is what I am told but no dealer in Colorado as of 9/25/2012 had it in stock. I drained and changed mine and I am sending it to lab to be tested to find the best time to change. I will up date this soon.

As long as its gl4 spec , it can be ran. A lot of people have change the oil. It's not a dealer only item. I switched to royal purple max gear. A lot of other people are tuning red line oil

The sonic doesn't have It's own "clutch" fluid. It uses brake fluid from the brake reservoir to operate the clutch slave cylinder (engage clutch/disengage clutch). NOTE: some cars have clutch fluid, some use clutch cables, others have a clutch linkage. All of this is independent of the actual manual transmission fluid.

As for the trans itself, the 6sp manual is not sealed and holds approx 2qts of oil.
I imagine the 5sp manual is similar. I suspect the automatics are "sealed" transmissions and hold around 10qts of fluid. I also suspect the fluid in them can be changed, just not easily.

I could be completely off base here, but it is my thoughts that if you have a leaking brake line, the fluid would drain out that hole, eventually draining the reservoir and leaving you no fluid to stop, or shift.

You can still start, stop, and shift without a functioning slave cylinder.

I could be completely off base here, but it is my thoughts that if you have a leaking brake line, the fluid would drain out that hole, eventually draining the reservoir and leaving you no fluid to stop, or shift.

If you get a rusted brake line that's leaking you shouldn't be driving the car. Problem solved that may be called a safety feature for morons.

More often then not the leaks occurs while you're driving...
Case and point, my dad went to stop fast when the light changed and the line was old and rusty enough he ruptured it, he didn't stop till he was most of the way through the intersection.
Needless to say he had to drive home very carefully..

The inspection shop should loose their license for passing that vehicle. And again you shouldn't operate any vehicle that isn't safe to drive. If you do, and kill someone say a child. Could you live with yourself? Is it worth it to save a couple bucks on a tow? If you do have a rare brake line failure that isn't due to neglect, call a tow truck.
If you were smart you wouldn't worry about how to drive an unsafe vehicle. You would make sure the vehicle is safe. If you can't do that on your own find a good reputable shop that can.

In 2005 I had a brake line blow out from rust through on my 95 town car while driving. Don't remember when it had last been inspected, probably within 2 years. It does happen.

Anyway, even with a combined master cylinder for the brake and clutch, shifting gears would not be my concern at that point. It is much easier to shift without a clutch than to stop without brakes.

You'll ruin the syncros in the trans by not using the clutch. Some cars last longer than others, but it does ruin it. Big rigs can do this.

i have had brake lines blow on multiple occasions while driving. if i was to change lines every time they appeared rusty, i would be changing them every few years if not sooner. i wouldn't be surprised if my current lines are already showing rust on a car that's a year old. driving on salted roads in the winter destroys most metal components rather quickly.

i have had brake lines blow on multiple occasions while driving. if i was to change lines every time they appeared rusty, i would be changing them every few years if not sooner. i wouldn't be surprised if my current lines are already showing rust on a car that's a year old. driving on salted roads in the winter destroys most metal components rather quickly.

Surface rust is ok and passes inspection here in ny. If the rust is flaking off or the diameter looks larger where it's rusted that line is getting ready to blow and would fail inspection.
