Rear View Camera

All new cars should, and "soon" must, have rear view cameras.
How about not new cars? Yes, them too! In fact cars should have multiple cameras although the roof camera watching for police copters and drones should be optional. The more cameras the better!

The optical sensor (used in all video cameras) company, OmniVision, layed me off Friday so, never mind.

I was wondering this today. I recently went to get my update on the MyLink radio and under Vehicle Settings there was a Rear View camera grid option. Maybe I got a wrong update??? this can be possible since I have to go back for the full update since it took over 2 hours (apparently I was the first Sonic to go in for this).

Bumping an old thread.
It has now been determined that the 2014's have a rearview camera (or at least the option). Also I've seen other posts showing a camera/license plate light for the sonic even before they officially said the 2014's would have a camera option. If any of you were reading the MyLink thread earlier this year when the BringGo/TuneIn update came out, you may remember people, myself included, getting an error saying to service the rear vision system on the MyLink screen when in reverse.
Now for my question that I asked in the massive MyLink thread that probably got lost.
Does anyone know if the '13 and '14 MyLink head units are the same? Can the camera and wiring be added to a '13 sonic with MyLink? Obviously it would need another reprogramming if it is even possible. If the head units aren't the same, can the '13 MyLink head unit be replaced by a '14 MyLink?

Does the camera help? Or is it a waste?
When I was shopping for my '13, I asked one dealer if a rear-view camera could be added. He said "yes, for $900". Another said "no", outright.
Now the question is if dealer A was merely trying to get me into waiting for a '14, rather than a heavily-discounted 2013 EOY model, or if they were ordering the '14 assy and installing it on one of their 2013s.

I spent awhile comparing part numbers and it looks like it *could* be possible, but there's a lot of parts to buy, and potentially, a whole body harness.
How badly does the lens get dirty, the back of my car is usually a different colour than the rest of my car. This is normally getting dirty during the winter with all the sand and salt on the roads and during the winter is when I find it harder to get a good idea of how far back the snow pile is.

In my opinion, the rearview camera option should be dropped on such a small car. Instead, the option of a heated steering wheel should be installed.
I experienced a heater steering wheel for the first time recently, and it was during a freezing temps. I love it. Would use it often.

I sent an email to a few different service managers who all told me it was "impossible". I don't see how when it all seems to be right there.
I am talking to a GM guy in Australia at the moment since they now have their Barina RS about getting the seat-hugging rear headrests. I think that will make a big difference.

Where are you looking to compare?
Besides the camera and connectors (I would make my own camera harness) what other parts could possibly be needed if the head unit is the same?
I've looked on gmpartsdirect and they don't list the radio or '14.

I know there are aftermarket kits available. GM also makes a kit that replaces the rearview mirror and has the display inside the new mirror.
I want it to be part of he radio. So it's easier to see. Kind of like looking at a picture on a tablet compared to a flip phone.

I remember seeing somewhere on here that there was a mini usb port unused on the back of the headunit. My bet is that is for a rear view camera. Someone should get a mini usb to rca adapter and one of the cameras that go by the license plate light off eBay and see if we can get it to work

I think a software update is needed.
When the bringgo tunein update came out I got a botched update. Every time I put the car in reverse I got a "service rear vision system" error displayed. After getting the correct update I don't get that anymore.
Aren't there chevy techs who are members of this forum? Maybe they can shed some light on the subject. I would like to have a camera since I have a small child who may leave toys and stuff behind the car and don't want to damage them or my car.
