Anyone hear liquid shifting or flapping when braking??

I just noticed this and I'm not sure how long it's been going on since I usually have music playing while I'm in the car. I had the radio off for some reason while I was at a stop light. When I went to accelerate I heard a bunch of liquid shifting. It only happens when I accelerate from a stop light. I don't hear anything when I brake, even if I brake fast.

Also, right around 700 miles I noticed that sometimes when I brake it make a weird sound...almost like something is flapping. I tried to recreate it this morning on my way to work and it only happened twice. I couldn't find a common thing I was doing that would make it happen.

Anyone got anything for me?

LOL...that's what I was thinking. I figured I'd ask to see if anyone else was hearing it though.

Which does yours do, too? Liquid shifting and/or flapping sound when braking?
If I had to guess, I'd say the liquid shifting... :banana:

liquid shifting. It almost sounds like the A/C coil drain pan is full of water. As for the flapping, check your sway bar links. mine did that too. ended up being a busted ball joint on my left link.

I know nothing about cars. Is it bad if the A/C coil drain pan is full of water?
As far as the flapping sound when braking goes...did yours happen on occasion or did it happen every time you hit the brakes?

Not necessarily. It just means it isn't draining well. I don't think it is a huge deal. just annoying.

Mine flapped or clunked whenever I hit the brakes or turned. It is starting to do it again so I will be ordering the aluminum sway bar links from Insane Speed.

Mine doesn't do it every time. I'm going to try to figure out if there's a common denominator...I just don't want my car to fall apart! :blankface:

I would take it to the dealer. I car that new shouldn't be making noises while braking.

When you're parked, rev the engine and listen. The liquid isn't related to acceleration for me, it's related to heavy load.

I wonder if is fluid running trough the heater core. This will be something I bring up at the dealer next time. Not that it is an issue. I'm just curious.

has anybody stopped to think it may be the gas shifting in the tank?
hybrids have that problem constantly because there is no engine noise to cover the gas sound.... and our Sonics are pretty quiet

ive heard the gas shifting if I park into the garage pretty quickly and then shut off the car.

That was my original thought, but wouldn't I hear it when I stop, especially if I stop fast? The only time I've heard it is when I accelerate after being stopped at a stop light. I even tried stopping fast to see if I could hear it then, but I couldn't. I had a hybrid before my Sonic and I never heard the gas shifting in the tank.

Several GM's of mine do this, including my Sonic, start it up cold, and increase the RPM's slowly, sounds like a babbling brook in the dash.

Same thing in my 98 LeSabre, 96 S10 and 91 S10.

I agree with Savage. I only hear it on cold start-up and I'm bringing the revs up for my first departure. It sounds like an air bubble in the heater core being pushed out. The question is: Should the cooling system be bled, or is it normal?

I took it to the dealership. The liquid shifting sound had something to do with the a/c. Air had gotten in somewhere so they had to vacuum it out of whatever area it had gotten in. Remember...I'm not a car person. lol
The flapping when I was braking I couldn't recreate for the mechanic. He did say that there was a mud flap that wasn't bolted down which may have been causing it. I thought I heard it starting to make that flapping sound again on my way home, but it wasn't as pronounced as it had been. I'll be able to tell tomorrow on my way to work if it acts up again.
