We got our first Trax at the dealership today. My first impression is good. The 1.4t powers it nicely. Not fast, but its enough power. The size is comfortable and it is pretty reasonably equipped. Comes standard with a few goodies.

This one is an LT with AWD:

I personally don't think GM needs another small SUV.
This makes the Trax-Encore, Captiva-Equinox-Terrain, Traverse-Acadia, plus your bigger Tahoe-Suburban-Yukon.
Just seems like market pollution.

I kind of thought the same thing at first but this thing is competitive with vehicles like the CRV. Chevrolet needed that. And from my ecperience people that are shopping for the tahoe or suburban are a completely different market. They are not your typical suv and they are not for your average suv customer. I think the trax fills a nice hole.

This competes with the likes of Subaru(forester, outback, XV) Honda(CRV) Nissan(rogue) and toy-jotah (rav4, Venza)in the crossover/mini suv market. I agree on Tahoe/suburban being a totally different demographic. I don't see someone looking for a 'burban considering any of the cars listed above

There is no Captiva anymore - that was a fleet vehicle only - and was actually the old Saturn Vue. As I understand it - they were basically just using up some of the old Saturn parts inventory for the most part.

As to the Trax/Encore - the Buick and Chevy buyers are different demographics. The Encore starts at about $24,000 and the Trax at about $20,000.

Personally I don't like the looks of the Buick and am more attracted to the looks of the Trax. But styling is a personal thing. There are also a lot more color choices and many of the colors are one's that I think will be more attractive than the colors that Buick offers.

The one that is "polluted" is the Acadia/Traverse/Enclave (you forgot the Buick variant).

Do you have a manual transmission? Chances are that the "transfer case" is the same as with most GM FWD based systems and it is part of the automatic trans.

Awd does not use a transfer case. That's all time 4wd. (Like the h2 and h3 hummers have)

At $25k you might as well get the Buick. That's what we paid for my wife's. The only thing I can see being better about the trax is if comes in mt and u want that. I'm not sure if the encore comes in awd. Where I live awd is useless anyway.

Also these are considerably smaller than the equinox and gets better gas mileage. They are also much more sporty. If u want a sporty looking suv gm next size up is not sporty.

Unless they put in a 2.0t awd for an rs version to compete with nismo juke. I'd trade my sonic for that.

Minor correction, its a "Power takeoff unit". A glorified name for a transfer case in a FWD based application that is now AWD. In a RWD based application that is now AWD it is still called a transfer case.

I think you are comparing pricing of a FWD Buick to an AWD Trax.

Yes, the Encore does come in AWD.

You think the sonic parts will fit on the encore? I know it's begged but the engine sits in about the same spot and a top of room above the engine.

Also anyone wanting to buy a trax should wait to see if the 1.6 comes to the U.S. Next year.
