Anyone change M/T 6 spd oil yet?

Just wondering if anyone has changed over to synthetic in the manual trans. If so, did you notice any improvements in shifting or mpg?

I'm sure it's not "necessary" until around 50k but I may just do it for peace of mind. I like to run full syn in everything. My truck has it in the engine, trans, transfer case and axles. honestly, most of the new chevys come with Dex 6 in the low power manual trans.

Cobalt SS, camaro, corvette all have standard 75-90 gear oil. But non-SS cars with Standard Trans usually have Dex 6 or Manual trans/Transfer case fluid (fairly similar).

Dex 6 is full sythetic, super high quality and actually fairly expensive. When it was first introduced, it was like $20+ per qt. Anyways, Ill look up what it takes tomorrow, but you'll have a hard time finding a better fluid. DEXRON (2,3 and 6 are interchangable, 6 is full syn) is used by A LOT of manufacturers. Toyota uses it in there power steering systems, Nissan/Infinity use it in their trans and transfer cases (Skyline/G35), etc. It might not be worth it to change, and could affect warrenty if the fluid is not to required spec.

Im at work and just looked it up on GM Service Information, and came up with

"Ask your dealer"

seeing as I work at the dealer, I went to parts and asked them to look it up,

they came up with

"Ask your dealer"

Soo, I might call Technical Assistance, but a lot of those guys are *******s and might right me up or something. Ill update this when I find out what it takes.

The P/N for the manual transmission gear oil is 19259104. It's basically a 70W80 GL-4 gear oil.

there are different kinds of Manual trans fluid on GM. Did you find this part number for the sonic somewhere

I work for the mother ship in Warren MI. That is the correct oil. I don't know why the catalog is not listing it correctly though. Have you contacted Partech?

Did you search ESI? The oil is called out under preliminary information in the transmission section. See PI0550A.

70w80 seams like a weird weight, where did you get that info?
Seeing as it is a gear oil and not a fluid, maybe Ill look into changing mine over.

I have always seen at least some improvement in switching to a full synthetic on a manual trans. But most of my experience is with old Mazdas.

Redline MT-90, that sh*t fixes alot of gear grind issues.
Either that or get to granny shifting! (double clutching)

Technically, you should never need to change your tranny oil. That's why it's sealed. BUT, some people have noticed improved shifting from changing the fluid. Improvement noted in auto and manual tranny.

Now im confused is the manual 6spd sealed or not? Im looking to have mine changed out to redline as well but do not want to void warrenty

yea i read the article, I just seem to think of it to be very difficult to push the dealer to want to do that for me.

I know some people are persistent and good at complaining to get what they want from the dealer, but ive always been the more passive type.

My question can chevy know that I changed my transmission oil?

i went to service department yesterday and told them when my car get out of the body shop i would like them to change my transmission fluid to redline and they said no problem
