Oil filter collapsed last two oil changes.

Yeah, I probably should start using something better. Right after I bought the car, I went and bought 3 different oil filters, a AC Delco, Fram, and a STP. I compared them and the Fram looked to me like the better quality. The filter media appeared thicker and more sturdy I guess you could say. So I returned the other 2. I'm not sure what you mean by "pleats" in the filter media. Could you explain that to me? I'm new to cartridge filters. This is the first car I've owned that uses them. Next oil change I'll try another brand.

The "pleats" are the where the "yellow" filter media goes back and forth towards the center of the filter. Assuming the same quality of filter media - the more "pleats" the more filtering surface area the filter has.

Fram is one of the worst filters on the market. I wouldn't use them if I could get them free. In the industry we call them the "orange can of death".

In a recent comparison of entry level filters we compete with, our house brand "Pronto" oil filter (our economy filter) # PO2222 (ACDelco PF48 equivalent) was compared to the Parts Master and Fram equivalents.

The Pronto had 28 pleats in the filter media, the Parts Master had 15 pleats and the Fram had 14 - or half the filtering media of our lowest price filter (I sell most Pronto filters for well under $2.00 each).

I could not agree more about Fram. Without a doubt, probably one of the worst filters on the market. A few years ago, some of their filters were known to collapse and cause engine failure.
Terrible product for sure.

When you looked at the WIX and the ACD, was it a canister or a cartridge filter?



If it was a cartridge, did you take the time to count the pleats?

Regardless - the OP has had 2 consecutive WIX filters fail on his Sonic. We haven't had anyone post on a failure of an ACD filter.

Sonic filters so cartridge. All Markings and identification information was identical. Every number, letter, symbol, ect printed on the filter was the exact same between both filters. I didnt count the pleats since it really made no difference at that point in time.

I dont use WIX filters since I found out that I can just go to the dealer and buy the Delco for about 60% what the WIX filter costs.

As to pricing, the filters should sell for close to the same price, as our cost is within $.50 cents of each other (the WIX is the more expensive filter).

I just bought a few AC Delco's on RockAuto for like $5 each, or half what they or Wix cost at O'Reilly's. Figured it cant hurt to have a few sitting on the shelf.

It is completely possible that at some point they were both produced in the same facility. This was early on in my Sonic ownership, so around 3 years ago. This is not really uncommon for parts like filters.

Same goes for things like clutches. For my one Cavalier I had I used three different clutches (one was the OEM factory install). All three were from different companies and all three had identical markings. All Three were also marked as a LuK clutch.

Things most likely have changed since the last time I purchased a WIX filter and they are no longer the same as a Delco. Now that I know I will continue to just buy the Delco filter from my dealer for $6.36.

If you were thinking that would work on the Sonic - it won't. It's a common canister filter for GM pickup trucks.

I was using that only in comparison to the Parts Master and Fram versions of the same filter - as that is the comparison that I have the actual filters cut open so you can count the pleats.

Sorry for any confusion. The correct ACDelco # is PF2257G and the Pronto version is the PO5839.

For our application, even thought the Pronto is much better than Fram or Parts Master, I would only buy the ACD filter.

At my cost, there is only a $2.87 difference between the two. I think that is $3.00 well spent.

WIX typically makes their own filters. It just might be that early on, WIX bought the ACD filter and put it in their box until their factories were up to speed.

When we bought our Sonic a month or two ago , one of the first things I did was order 4 AC Delco filters from Rockauto.com .

Any comment on a Purilator filter for the sonic ? Hot one free with 5 quarts of mobile synthetic oil , at Advance .

Think they also sell Wix filters , but do not know if they stock the one for the sonic ?

Wyr, you should go to walmart for the 5 quart jug it's a lot cheaper than most places. I get my 5 quart jug of mobil one extended performance for 28$. not sure on the purilator filters though I just stick with the AC Delco.

That's why I don't shop at O'Reilly's, AutoZone, Advance or NAPA...

hahah very true but I needed to get my oil change done and didn't want to wait for the filter in the mail. Those stores are way over priced as well. I'm just glad walmart has the mobil 1 extended in stock for cheap but don't have our ac delco filters only fram for the sonic and you know all about those frams

this is a common problem with many aftermarket filters for this application. Use the acdelco pf2257g.
