Aveo vs. Sonic

From what I have been able to figure out , the early Aveos were either the same or very similar to the Korean car GM bought out ? And they sound like they had more than their share of problems ?

As time went by , the product line acquired a new name , Sonic . And it sounds like it has transitioned , at least some , from its Korean heritage . It also sounds like it had gotten more reliable .

At least I hope so . We recently purchased a 2015 LS 1.8l automatic .

What are the common problems with the current generation of Sonics ? And their fixes / solutions ?

The Sonic doesn't compare to the Aveo as far as problems. The Aveo had many problems. The Sonics have had a few mainly in the beginning 2012, but they have made improvements.

In my case . My 2012 sonic has had way more than my 09 aveo. Aveo has 85k miles sonic just hit 50k miles. I always tease my girlfriend how the $10k aveo is more reliable than the $17 sonic.

Sonic is the North American name of the Aveo. The current Aveo is the third generation, and when buying overseas sourced after market parts for the Sonic one will sometimes see TIII or labeling to that effect.

The Sonic is the replacement for the Aveo. Chevy realized that the Aveo had such a terrible (mostly deserved) reputation in the US that merely going to a third generation was not going to be enough, they would have to rename the car in order to wipe some of that bad taste out of our mouths.

This tactic seems to have largely worked; sales of the Sonic have been much better than those of the Aveo.

Oddly, in Europe, the "Sonic" is called Aveo. I'm not really clear why this is... did the Aveo not have as terrible a rep there as it did here?

I remember reading that from surveys they conducted, the other countries preferred the Aveo name over Sonic. It has less to do with reputation and more just the name.

The Sonic is designed by GM's Daewoo (S Korea) division, as the Aveo was, but the US Aveo was imported from Korea, where the US Sonic is assembled in Michigan. To my knowledge, the drivetrain of the US Aveo wasn't used in any other US market vehicles, while the US Sonic shares its drivetrain with a few others (which helps with it getting attention/support, more abundant and inexpensive parts, easier time getting good service, etc.).

Comparing the Sonic to the US Aveo looks to be comparing apples & oranges. Sit in and drive both, and you'll see there's very little in common, and the Sonic is on a whole other level of refinement and features. Any additional reliability issues surely stem from added complexity, as you're comparing a super basic cheap car to a really, really nice car. I kinda hate to even call the Sonic an economy car, though it is. Goes to show how far cars in general have come.

Can't speak to the Aveo but my 2013 LT Hatch has been flawless. All my complaints about the car were apparent before I bought it, but I still did buy it. It a good little car that gets me where I want to go, when I want to go.

It seems to me that the sonic is somewhat bigger than the Aveos not to mention a much more attractive car!!I would think the sonic is more comparable to the cobalt??

You are correct. All Aveos run on Kim-chi. All Sonics run on corn fed beef:banana:

I haven't noticed this but in the South African market. The Aveo is still being produced and sold as its own vehicle and the Sonic is its own vehicle. Apparently the Aveo was a big hit here so they decided to continue with the line.

Funny thing about the old Aveo being a worse car, it's a much better buy. From a financial perspective, it's one of few decent 5 yr old cars you can buy for 3-4 grand with under 50k miles. Or it may be the only one that fits that bill.
