Cold Air Intake with Ram air Scoop.

I have looked everywhere for a proper real cold air intake. But everything that I have seen so is pod air setup in the engine bay. Which really isn't a cold air intake. I'm after something had an actual cold air intake which uses a direct ram air of cold air which is than delivered to the pod filter. Anybody got any proper Ideas about a good setup which doesn't involve deleting the high bean headlight and use that as a ram air effect.
I was thinking something more along the line of having the intake go in front of the wheel well behind the fog lights but than I need a for or scooping cold air up into that area.

There were a few folks that ran tubing to the fog light..
Taking the snorkel off any that draws air from above the fender liner should be cooler..

Best I've seen is whitesmoke 's air scoop. I've seen it in person..I cannot think of anything that would make the intake air any cooler..

But a WRX has its scoop in the middle of the hood where it has it's intercooler on top of the engine.

How will yours work...we have to cut a hole in our hood ?

I'm going to either cut the hole in the center or on the passenger side where the intake is. Either way it'll be direct air intake.

There are only 2 truly cold air intakes available for the Sonic: the stock air box and the GM performance intake. The only alternative is DIY.

Forget Ram air. Just focus on a good flowing intake with as few bends as possible that draws from a cool source. The turbo is going to pull more air through than any ram system can push in.

Passenger side will allow rain water and snow melt to drip onto the alternator.

I would be concerned about a center mount unless it is built to funnel the air flow into the air box similar to how the RKSport ram air hood for the Cavalier did it.

After more than a year of testing 3 different intakes & comparing against the factory intake the only difference between all of them is airflow. None of the intakes made any difference to intake temps. The only other intake I want to test that I haven't yet is the MPFab, haven't found one cheap enough yet but I'm expecting the same results, more airflow. The intercooler keeps the intake temps at or 1 degree Celsius over ambient. The only time the intake temps climbed any higher was when stuck in city traffic or with continued hooning. When stuck in city traffic on a 43C day the intake temps climbed to 52C, then when traffic cleared & I was able to cruise at 100kph the intake temp only came back down to 47C, this was due to heat soak in the intercooler, it took much longer to recover. With continued hooning on another hot day, 37C, I was able to get the intake temp up to 41C. This was done with lots of twisty mountain road driving, constantly over 4500rpm's in 3rd & 4th gear but as soon as we backed off for a couple of minutes the intake temp came back down.
I have the factory intake back in the car now but I will be changing back to an aftermarket intake when I change my exhaust to something that can take advantage of the extra airflow. If I really wanted to make sure intake temps remained low I'd be upgrading the intercooler, this is the only upgrade that will help there.

I agree with caveats: a tune can affect engine temp, and a vent to help extract hot air from the engine bay can be effective. But I do believe increasing airflow with a well designed intake is also effective in the short term and with a tune can be effective for the long term. I should point out a splitter is also effective in pushing hot air out of the engine bay.

I'm still waiting on the splitter. John is working on getting it reproduced. That's the only splitter I'll buy. As far as the heat extraction. I haven't decided yet where I'll do my cuts and in what shape they'll be.

With the stock intake, which uses a snorkel to get air from outside the engine bay, I saw intake air temps at about ambient when in motion (about 75 when ambient is 70). If you sit at a stop light or in traffic IAT still climbs to over 100 pretty quickly when it's 70 outside. Put on a DDM intake with heat shield on Friday and honestly see almost exactly the same results as far as IAT are concerned. I think the whole notion of a true cold air intake is a bit overblown, at least for this car. Do as you wish, but I think funnels, scoops, etc would not be worth the time.

Thanks guys I think I'm gonna go for this sort of setup with a scoop under the wheel arch plastic trim to direct cold airflow into the compartment which will allow the wifi take to breath fresh cool air.

Personally I've had better results (with previous vehicles) with a simple short ram setup then to over complicate things to acquire "colder" air. There is lots of airflow going through the engine compartment. Unless the filter is near the exhaust manifold or blocked by another hot component i usually don't worry.

I once cut a cold air setup into a short ram (about half the length of the pipe) on a b18 honda and actually noticed an improvement in throttle response and no loss in power.
