Currently at a local dealership after self diagnosing uv coolant dye found in head that is apparently assisting in making colorful caramel colored milkshakes. :sadbanana:

End of the day mileage for my 12 Sonic LTZ HB is 209,295K. I'd be pushing 250k+ if I drove it every day. Most mileage driven in a 24hr period is 1700 miles. Drove from Louisiana to Idaho took a couple hour nap and completed the rest of the trip to Portland totaling 2516 miles in 38hrs.

I'm interested in knowing the outcome. I drive 104 miles daily commute.

It is a touchy subject with me currently, so I will try to keep to the basics to satisfy curiosity. No white smoke or any abnormal smoke from the exhaust, btw.


The service advisor said the head was fine but the oil cooler cracked, leaking coolant into the lower portion of the block; they also opened the bottom end. Bearings showed signs of abnormal frictional wear, therefore, his belief is the bearings showed enough wear/damage from coolant that the lower end would only last a couple thousand miles before giving way, if only the oil cooler was replaced.


The GM dealer rep(?) wants to do a 60/40 costs split on a new engine. Even after having and offering proof that I called the dealership and left voicemails and made several calls to schedule a pressure test and uv dye, weeks before my drivetrain warranty expired, without ANY return calls. My costs are about $3000 for being dodged.

End of the day mileage for my 12 Sonic LTZ HB is 209,295K. I'd be pushing 250k+ if I drove it every day. Most mileage driven in a 24hr period is 1700 miles. Drove from Louisiana to Idaho took a couple hour nap and completed the rest of the trip to Portland totaling 2516 miles in 38hrs.

I drove a few times from Houston to Portland OR when we were relocating - once the same brutal way you did. But when with sonic I towed it behind our odyssey! The nap only was in a rental truck however! Ugh. Not fun.

Ok here goes....I am now at 268000 miles. Other than maintenance... oil changes, air filter, wiper blades and tire changes and rotations etc I am now on my third set of sway bar links (all stock) but I now have a popping noise from the front end that I am trying to track down. I replaced the throttle body at 102k miles that I believe was caused from overfilling the gas tank - seriously overfilling like 2 to 3 gallons after the original pump shutoff. I have replaced one water outlet. Also one radiator recently but I have not added any coolant since I replaced my turbo. Had to have a mechanic replace both struts and springs along with 1 ball joint about 6 months ago. My last big expense was 2 weeks ago I replaced the turbo due to P0299 codes. When I got it off I took the turbo loose from the exhaust manifold and realized that while the turbo looked reasonably well it was difficult to turn. I wonder how long I have been running without the full function of the turbo. I have now purchased the Ultragauge to keep any eye on coolant temp and turbo boost. I just hope I am looking at the right feature for the turbo boost. I am trying to figure out how to add pics and video to this but I can't get them off of my phone. Pics finally...

Popping noise if not going over bumps could be another sway bar link. Use the auto zone or other should be metal and higher quality.
Or it could be the cv joint if worse when turning. If you are handy not too bad to replace but make sure you need it. The throttle body probably had no correlation with fuel vapor recovery being flooded with fuel, must have worked itself out driving it.

Huh. I wouldn't have thought the filter housing would go at that mileage. Was it leaking, how do we know when it's gone kaput?

I have an hour commute each way, this is mainly highway miles. I am averaging over 40 mpg steadily even with this many miles on it, and a tune.

2012 1.8 6at 68000 completely stock other than new tires and a subwoofer install.



Shifter button just started sticking this week. Have to fiddle with it to pop out so I can remove the ignition key.

Did you ever figure out the shifter button problem? I'm getting the same

47K, no issues too large.
Tranny whine (I think)...sounds like a very well made sewing machine purring along, it's very light, and in the background but there. Goes with speed of car, in gear or not. I don't think we have speedo cables these days, and there's nothing else that rotates at engine speed that makes that sound.
Will change tranny fluid very soon. 1.4T 6 speed.

I just bought a used Sonic with 126,000 miles on Friday. 2012, 1.4T, automatic, LTZ sedan. Not sure *I* deserve to be on the list, since I'm not the one who put the miles on it, but I think the car deserves some recognition.

Got mine replaced under warranty at 50,000 I believe. It happend not long after I got the car and Ive had no problems ever since. It now has just over 80,000km. 2012 sonic 1.8 automatic
