Transmission fluid change

Sound like the dealer thought you had an automatic..and it sounds like half truth advice.
For my automatic they fixed an axle seal saying that was the cause of the leak. .I don't know if that fixed it yet. But they up selled a transmission flush to me for the automatic. Apparently they flush the fluid through the trans cooler lines that go to the radiator.
But for my automatic they said it was due for a change at 50k miles. I have no idea if the change was necessary but it was not super expensive or anything. With no dipstick and multiple changes needed to get all the fluid out of the trans I thought this beat me spending an afternoon doing it..

Anyway if you can do the manual or auto fluid yourself than it seems a good thing no matter when you do it.

Let me try to understand what you just said the service advisor told you: Because you didn't change the manual transmission lubricant at 50K miles, when and if you do replace the lubricant, the transmission would probably slip.

Where do these people that staff the GM dealers come from? How can someone whose occupation is automotive service, spew this kind of mistruth.

A manual transmission does not contain components that could cause it to slip; there are many other potential problems that a manual transmission could develop, but slippage is not one of them! The clutch assembly can slip if contaminated or worn, but that isn't related to lube replacement, and isn't part of the transmission.

It's good that you were able to perform the fluid replacement on your transmission yourself. I wish our dealers would be more honest and professional in their dealings with their customers, stop the BS, and stop the attempts to up-sell unnecessary service.

I completely agree with you. It's a real shame when you go to your dealership for service, instead of a shop in the corner or an independent mechanic, and what is suppose to be a place of trust tries to get over on you... It comes down to this... If you can do your own maintenance, DIY. If you're not mechanically incline, find a trust worthy mechanic that's not going to put profit over honesty...

I believe it's the same for both auto and manual
But I really recommend redline for any car fluid

Not to jack this thread but, I want to change my trans fluid over the christmas break, but I'm a little confused. I'm going to use Royal Purple just because I can pickup local and not have to order in, but would I run RP Synchromax or RP 75-90 Max Gear oil?

My understanding is Synchromax is a bit thinner and would be ok and the 75-90 gear oil is a bit thicker and for more heavy duty use? Is that correct?

Depends on what trans you have. The 5 speed like the heavier oil a little better where as the 6 tends to like the synchromesh

Put amsoil synchromesh in mine today. Im not sure if it was the factory fill in the car but most likely was, came out a golden color. Actually looked like it was still good. Car has 32k. Mine shifted fine but it definetely feels a little different after the change. Cant yet say if its better or not but I think it needs a few hundred miles to see the difference. Definitely more notchy when cold but feels good when warmed up.

It will slightly change from degradation also if it gets run really hot
But it shouldn't be much if at all noticeable unless you had two to compare
Otherwise you probably have a leak somewhere
But I'd be more worried about particulate than color

I was expecting some black watery burnt fluid to come out, based on what I had read on the cruze forums. Sure the color cant tell you if additive packages are depleted or anything like that but based on the fact that my fluid looked good and my car shifted fine, I think it was probably still ok.

On another note, gearboxes can still be very hard on fluid, just ask anyone with a Chrysler 9.25 rear end in their Ram 1500. You may not have contamination from combustion, but you still have the heat factor that can break down the fluid. Those things get extremely hot and have a very short change interval on synthetic 75w140 (15k).

Even worse if it's Chrysler/fiat

At least when it was just dodge it was decent

But yea you really need trans coolers on that thing
Basically a second rad is needed
And finned piping for good measure

I have a 13 Ram 5.7 and its been a great truck. Hasn't had any issues and tows beautifully. They come with a pretty heavy transmission cooler, I rarely see trans temps above 160 even when towing 6k. Rear ends do get hot as I mentioned, but if you follow the maintenance intervals its fine.

I've also heard of trans issues with overheating but that may be a different year
But awesome trucks
I've personally just seen too much wrong with them to be worth it for me

But they seriously need a diff cooler too

Finally went ahead and changed the fluid in mine with Amsoil Manual Transmission and Transaxle 75-90 gear oil. Drained out 1.5L and refilled with 2.5L. No real noticeable difference. But it should protect the trans better.

It won't do much for a manual transmission but help with wear
It'll keep your syncros for longer

2015 Sonic LS 1.8l Automatic

I need some help / information , please .

Transmission fluid change , drain it out the bottom . Fill until it runs out the overflow hole . Do I check it ( after it is driven ) with engine off or on ?
