Turbski on a 1.8??

Ok so I know I have joked in the past about a turbo kit for my wife's 1.8 and we came to the agreement it was not worth it due to costs etc. But I have the option to get a turbo off of a 1.4l (I know it's small lol) and the downpipe/intercooler/icpipes for like 75$. With that being said do y'all think I should buy them and start fabricating up ways to make it work on the 1.8? I know there is a lot of time/work that would be needed for this but i would make it a year long project in order to complete the work in stages.

Any input or thoughts? And I know the performance gain would probably be minimal but the inner gear head in me wants to at least give it a go lol. At worst I would only be out 75$ in the beginning.

The exhaust flange is different between the engines, the 1.4T is Fam 0 and 1.8 is Fam 1. You'd be better off finding a turbo setup off a 1.6T Fam 1 engine, everything *should* bolt right on. Unfortunately, only a few vehicles stateside use this engine, most are in Europe.

But heck, if you can weld a bit and arent afraid to have the turbo up a little, you could mod it to work. Then just figure out exhaust, intake system (will have to be customized a bit as the tb for the 1.4T is on the drivers side whereas the 1.8 is passengers), and tuning. Injectors might be ok, but you'll probably run out of them quickly at low boost.

I believe the 1.8 has different port spacing and bolt holes for the exhaust manifold meaning you need to have a custom manifold built. It doesn't have to be fancy, but good design = good power.... Good luck!

Yea I would probably let the turbo sit higher, I would have to fab up a custom manifold, which I have planned on. The intake would be an interesting obstacle but hopefully not to big of an issue. Exhaust would be built at the same time the manifold is and will be kept as simple as possible.

I have an interesting idea for the intake but there will a lot of measuring/testing for proper fitment lol

My biggest concern would be fueling (which could be fine once some proper tuning gets involved) and then actually finding out how much boost the 1.8 can take lol

Yep exactly. If you're planning on building a custom exhaust manifold already, could you just cut the flange off the 1.4 turbo and weld it directly to your new manifold? Thinking Sloppy Mechanics style here, just use the cheap turbo and weld it vs buying a larger one.

BNR makes injectors for the 1.8 that are $400. They dont specify the lb/hr rating, just that they're for E85.

Now that I think about it I might do that but if its going to be to sloppy I will just have to incorporate the same style flange into the new manifold.

I saw the BNR injectors, I am hoping that someone else will have ran them by the time I start actually putting the build together.

Most likely I will stick with stock fuel at first and get some good tuning done, and then if I need those injectors, I will pick them up.

So as of now this is the parts list I am thinking:

Turbo: Stock off of 1.4l
1.4l Intercooler with IC pipes (might upgrade to some vibrant performance IC boots and may have custom IC pipes made)

Custom exhaust manifold and flange
Custom turbo mount (will steal the mounting location from the 1.4 but will modify as necessary)
Custom intake
And of course integrating the cooling lines from the turbo into the 1.8

And a custom exhaust to let all the extra ponies escape

The stock turbo off the 1.4 WILL NOT work. The turbo is physically to small to feed the engine.

It's a GT1446, What more do you want out of it.

Full tilt flows about 17-18lb on a good day. My 1.8 flows that now in NA form.

Not true.

It's small for the application, but it's not too small. It will work.

It will work, but very poorly and would probably make about as much power as a 1.8 can with a proper tune and a header. It is way too small for a 1.8. Its borderline too small for a 1.4.

They don't really mod the 1.8's

They have the amazing Z16ler engines that they stuff giant turbos and **** on.

Those parts just happen to fit the 1.8.

We have also had this version of the 1.8 for close to 10 years

True, we've had these motors around for a while but small car culture isn't as strong here. Thankfully the UK and Germany know what's up.

I'll be upgrading the 1.4 turbo to a K04 or K06 one of these days thanks to opel enthusiasts

It does look very promising, that price just hurts a little bit lol I know when it comes to boosting stuff its not cheap, I just would want to make sure this kit would work on the car before buying it.

Right, so a larger turbo will be needed (not that big of a deal). But it raises the question of how much boost can a 1.8 take lol.

If you can source the manifold you can build your own kit, that's going to be the cheapest wayto get er done. This kit isn't necessarily the holy grail but it's good inspiration
