I got this email from my dealership today. They also left a message on my answering machine but I have not yet returned the call.

"When you purchased your Sonic, you elected to receive Dealer Maintenance Notifications from your preferred dealership, Fremont Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC. OnStar has notified us about an open recall campaign on your 2013 Sonic: Recall Number: 2016186 Catalytic converter internal damage."

Perhaps this is related to the 1.8L intake hose failure, or not.

I thought they already had a recall for the intake hose splitting?
I believe this is for the issue with oil consumption in the .8 due to a failed cat.

Someone posted a thread about this recall and I took it to Chevy 2 days ago (2014 Lt 1.8) and he couldn't work on it because my car didn't have it listed under the recall he told me to call ahead when I get the letter cause it's not all the sonics from 13-14.

Also the guy didn't replace my MAF because I haven't had any issues with it even though I did get the letter for that one. I was a little salty and don't know if the guy was lazy or should I really have to wait for my air flow to crack before they can swap it out?

General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall on certain 2013-2014 model year Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic vehicles equipped with a 1.8L engine (RPO LWE). On some vehicles, cracking of ceramic components internal to the catalytic converter may occur as a result of higher than anticipated exhaust temperatures. If this occurs, the catalytic converter low efficiency diagnostic will set and the malfunction indicator lamp will illuminate.

Repair Description:
Dealers are to reprogram the engine control module with calibrations that prevent higher than expected exhaust temperatures.

So then the question arises, what will be the downside of re-programing?

It could involve a tiny loss in fuel economy. The easiest/safest way to reduce exhaust temperatures is to enrichen the fuel mixture.

Changing the ignition timings could do it too. I can't remember whether advancing or retarding the timings will do it. Advancing will increase the chance of knock or add a requirement for higher octane fuel. Retarding will reduce power output.
