3D printed Vent Gauge pod!

So today I spent several hours designing a gauge pod for my drivers side air vent.

I have printed out a few different revisions already but i think this is the one im going to end up with as it mimics the 5 spoke pattern of the original vent.

Im looking to make this still functional as a vent so once all is done ill be printing in ABS to better handle the heat of vent in the winter.

ill update with the final product when its done but till then let me know what you guys think of the design.

fast test print finished:banana:, its not the best quality for a print but i printed it at 3x the speed and half the resolution i usually do.. took about 4 hrs even at that lol. the final high quality piece will take over 12 hrs to print :sadbanana:

I think im pretty happy with the look and fit. once sanded down I think the final piece will be perfect. now just to order some black ABS to print the final piece.
ill try and take a pic of this test piece in the car tomorrow.

Just fitted the test part this morning and it flows fantastic!
The key to getting this to work will be that material that will hold up to the heat. Im sure ABS will work since it has a 240-250 degree melting temp.. right now im printing it with PLA which has a melt temp around 190-210.

here are a few pics of it in place with out the gauge in. its angled a little toward the steering wheel

What's the details on your 3D printer? I'm intrigued by your setup there

Its an bowden E3D upgraded Anet A8.
I custom designed the carriage and fan for the extruder and the rig is fully braced and hard mounted to a Ikea Lack table...

all this allows me to print up to super high resolutions of .02mm or really fast lol

yea please keep me posted. not sure what gauge I would put in there though. boost, coolant temp, or oil pressure..

That's awesome! I just bought the ZZP pillar mount for my WBO2 and Aeroforce, but you should either offer these as a one-off purchase/GB event or (if you're willing to) give away the CAD design so others can print their own.

Either way, can't wait to see it in black ABS!

Just ordered the some black ABS and PLA+

Going to continue prototyping in the black PLA+
Then when I'm happy I'll print a final one out in ABS and torture test it with heat from the vent.

I honestly was just designing if for myself and wasn't planning on producing them but if I have enough interest in it I might consider doing so. So you guys tell me

Vapor bath post print will help reduce sanding, at the right speed possibly eliminate it.

i like it, however I went this route because i don't have a 3D printer lol

not sure how much yours will cost you to make, and I am sure it will be an exact fit, but this one def works.

I created a new version today... I had to learn how to use Fusion 360 to make it but totally worth it. The other one which I made in Tinkercad was just kinda proof of concept. I wanted to make this one 100% production quality.

I might make a few revisions before I print but here is a preview...

update: got some black PLA and ABS in the other day.
I decided to do a super fast low quality print of the newer revisions but with the new black PLA. I still think I need to work with some of the dimensions a little bit to fine tune the fit but its basically there . once Im fully happy with everything Ill be printing one in ABS so that it can hold up to the temps in the car better.

here it is printed in Black PLA with the gauge installed... I have the vacuum line in but I dont have it wired for power yet but you can get an idea of the look.

this has been a fun project to work on

To me its view ability is great from the drivers position. Let me know what you think about it!?
