Supercharger in the 1.4T?

Okay, I know this is total overkill considering how small this car is . I'm building a theoretical rally sonic and found this tiny little centrifugal supercharger:

R50-1560-BLK - Kraftwerks Rotrex Centrifugal Superchargers - Moddiction

and I'm thinking that it'd fit really nice where the A/C compressor is.

Other than losing the ability to cool off in summer, anyone seeing a problem? Probably around 8 psi of boost and the let BOV/BPV take care of overboost from the turbo. Tap into the intercooler and air intake or set up a cold air intake pipe for the super?

Let me know what y'all think! Especially if you think the head might visit me through the hood.

Can it be done? Sure, why not. VW has their Twincharged engines, both supercharger and turbo on the same engine.

Should it be done? Up to you.

Cost-effective? Probably not as that s/c its 2k that you could use to do a turbo swap and likely make more power. Where that power lands in the power band remains to be seen.

Bigger turbo with a tune is almost definitely going to produce more power. The super requires a bit of custom work, while bolt ons like the BNR turbo don't. The only benefit of twin charge over just turbo seems to be in off the line power. The Sonic has decent output around 2000, but below that I haven't found much in the stock tune.

Of course this is all hypothetical and I don't have the money to do a test of either option. On paper, the boost off the super carries you into the turbo range, but I have absolutely no idea what boost pressure to use or where to tie in a second charger to the intake manifold without fouling something planned by better engineers than I.

I’ve thought about the possibility of twin charging as well. If you put in a big turbo that the 1.4 couldn’t spool quickly, the super charger could work at the low RPM’s.

The rotrex centrifical blower has the same linear boost build like a turbo, you want a positive displacement unit like an Eaton to provide solid boost at very low rpms, and this would only help with a much larger turbo, the stock unit spools right off idle anyway.

If I planned to keep the stock turbo, this would be totally unnecessary and a bit wasteful since it would kick in with or after the turbo. You're right, the stock turbo is a really fast spooling unit. This super claims to boost off the line, but I don't see a Dyno result to prove it.

I was thinking about adding a clutch to the super to cut it off when the (hopefully larger) turbo engages or boost pressure hits a certain level. The rotex supercharger has no pulley included, so integrating a clutched roller might be workable. I could maybe even recycle the AC pulley if it could take the strain. This could make it possible to dial up the pressure or fit a larger super that will boost off the line. It would also solve the problem I was seeing with homebuilt twincharging; it looks like most purpose built engines have a cutoff for the super charger to prevent power loss, as well as a bypass to prevent a big supercharger-shaped air dam from suffocating the engine.

That's along the lines of what I was thinking! Or possibly bolting a large turbo to a 1.8 and adding the super to bridge the low-end gap. I'm not sure that all would fit in the engine bay, but worth a measure?

I would love to stick a roots or screw-type super under the hood of a sonic but I haven't seen any models that would fit or could be modified with my/my friends skill level. If ya know of a positive displacement blower that could fit without re-designing the bay or engine swapping, I'd love to hear about or see it!

If you were truly doing a rally setup like you claimed then wouldn't you do a slightly larger turbo with anti-lag? The supercharger wouldn't really give you any benefit over this and it would just add more complexity and weight.

I will say here what I say in every gun forum. Send it! Do it! Who cares if you blow the engine and have to walk home. You have to do this for us. Think of the children, think of the future. Somebody has to tell us if it can't be done. Please.
