Hello all,

I just bought a 2016 Sonic RS 1.4T hatch in Kinetic Blue and loving it. Unfortunately because of all the snow and ice here in Alberta I wont be modding my car until spring. But I have already started ordering parts and getting ideas. If anyone has anything I should do or ideas everything is welcome!!! I do work for GM so I have access to all OEM parts. I have gotten it tinted 15% all around and bought new winter tires for the stock RS rims and looking for new 17's for the summer. I will post pictures once its not snowing. LOL

Lifelong Toyota customer here. Been looking at a used Sonic because it's the right size and looks really nice. I'm still reluctant to take the plunge and get a GM. No offense but they have a terrible rep when it comes to reliability. Especially when it comes to the US plants.

One of the issues I've read about is that the relationship between GM and its parts suppliers isn't the best. Is this true?

Forgot to add that Canadian plants produce THE best cars. I wish websites would list where cars were produced on their specs page. It's not readily available information when doing a search for used cars.

Hello, and welcome to the forum. Is your car a 1.4 Turbo or a 1.8L? Kinetic blue looks great on these cars. As far as reliability goes in the past US manufactured vehicles were in general without a doubt lacking in build quality and workmanship, especially when compared to Japanese imports. However with automation in the manufacturing process US built vehicles have definitely caught up and in many cases surpassed imports in initial quality and long term reliability. Sadly, In most cases where the domestics haven't caught up is resale value. While overall Toyota’s don’t hold their value as a used car as well as Honda, Sonic’s have a fairly average reliability record but aren’t known to hold their value well down the road. Toyota’s, especially the ones built in Japan are well known to go for up to 300K miles with only routine maintenance more so than most any other manufacturer...

Hey there, when it come to reliability I have never had a problem with GM. I personally have owned 6 Gm vehicles and my family well over 25. That being said most have been built in Canada. When it comes to parts, if you are buying a pre-owned "2017 and older really" parts will not be problem. The only time parts are hard to find is for brand new vehicles that the factory cant produce enough parts to supply all the dealers. Bonus of buying a Sonic is everything is VERY cheap, so keep that in-mind.

Sure it is as long as you have the VIN. First digit is Country of Origin. If I recall, 1 is US, 2 is Canada, 3 - Mx, the rest I forget.

I'm not so sure about Canadian plants producing the best cars. I've been in a few and have owned a few Canadian built cars. One was a Rav4 built in Ontario. So many things I didn't like about it from a design standpoint but it was the transmission issue that was the last straw. Replaced with an Ontario built Equinox and couldn't be happier.

I'm looking at a new Sonic because the Chevy dealer locally gives a lifetime powertrain warranty that doesn't have to be serviced by them, just keep all service records (unfortunately its only for the original buyer).

But if they fix engine and turbo issues as long as I own it I hope it will be a good experience?...
