Agreed! I don't like the way the car drives with A/C on. It seems to fall on it's face between shifts making smooth shifts nearly impossible. I plan on using the A/C as little as possible.

I am one of those people who have the air turned on around the year. The only time it is turned off is when I get it back after something is done, such as after the fog lamps were installed. I notice very little impact from the compressor, perhaps because I almost always have at least one four cylinder car to drive. There is a dip in power when short shifting but I attribute that dip to engine/boost not to the air conditioning compressor.

This my first car that isnt approaching 300hp or torque so the in the past the ac eating accessorie hp wasnt noticeble...I do notice it on this 1.8

It's definitely not like the old days where turning the A/C off in my mini-truck meant 1 sec in the 0-60
I was driving to my daughter's one night with the windows down when my wife received a call. I had recently filled up (10 miles on the trip odo) so my avg. mpg was a little low. Probably 33ish.
I put the windows up and gained an almost instant 5mpg. It's shocking how much drag just having the windows down creates!
And just so I am on topic. I didn't buy a turbo for the mpg. That was a bonus! :banana:

Yes, that would be about right. The engine speed vs gear would be linear.

Yup, -37 mph... the car is faster in reverse than 1st
I think "diminishing returns" has something to say about that.
CoHPhasor, sorry if I'm not picking up on a joke here...yes, it is linear and there is no diminishing returns. If the clutch is engaged, road speed is linear with engine rpm...
Maybe it's because I like a noticeable difference in power from a turbo that I didn't feel anything better about the 1.4 Before I bought one I drove both with the 6 speeds. The turbo didn't feel any different in responsiveness or power. The only real logic for getting one was the better mpg. The one bad thing would be the eventual maintenance it would need. Seeing as how I've never heard good things about turbos in chevy's I wasn't too enthused by it. I would say in the long run the benefits of the turbo in mpg would be matched by the lack of maintenance from the N/A. Both cars drove the same in the end so I went with what would probably last longer. That and the turbo was sold before I got a chance to get one... Haha

i'm absolutely loving the mpg of my 1.4L. I filled up this morning, reset my DIC and drove to work. here's what it was telling me. out of town i have a stretch of 60mph then goto I-80 where its 75mph, to I-215 which is 65mph, to Legacy Parkway which is 55mph and finally I-15 and 65mph until i get to the offramp and do around 40mph.
sorry for this bad picture, but if you look at my Ultra-Guage it will tell just how much boost i usually do around 55mph

actually it'll be around 49mpg or 50mpg instead of 52mpg. the Dic is typically 2mpg on the high side for my car.
thats tuned and without cruise control(didn't get it). i'd say i have excellent foot to throttle control when i want to.

That is pretty awesome for those speeds! Just imagine what you could do with cruise. You're getting Prius MPG and have a car that will get out of its own way

i wish i had cruise. i'm not sure i'd get better mileage, but i'd sure give my foot a rest.
i slowly feather the throttle to try and duplicate what cruise does automatically. i'd have to say its working.

yeah i tried 217mph a few time.. the sonic is a little squirly but it was fun...:banana:

manual transmissions are always linear... they are a gear tooth to gear tooth no way to slip.... (unless thisngs go very bad) automatics have fluid couplers (torque converters) so the have a curved line on the graph
sspeckerwood.. your at 0 PSI at 55 mph so that means your running under light boost since a N/A car would be at 5-8 Hg of vacum.. just food for thought...
someone said the car didn't feel more powerful... well it was designed to have the same power as the 1.8 just better gas milage heck even the non 1:1 throttle plates opeing form a stop are there to save gas... get a tune and you will be really suprised

Sorry to inform you, but it's not linear, period.
Gears are linear, sure, that's a given.
Engines are *not* linear and they are part of that equation.
What it would take to be able to achieve those numbers would blow your mind, or your motor.
Please, show me the dyno sheet that disproves that fact, I'd love to see it.
