Gun accidents are apparently largely confined to an unusually reckless subset of the population, with gun accidents disproportionately occurring to people with long records of motor vehicle accidents, traffic tickets, drunk driving arrests, and arrests for violent offenses. Accidents are most common among alcoholics and people with personality traits related to recklessness, impulsiveness, impatience, and emotional immaturity.

Well, if TurboSonicLT has been proven to have a long record arrests for violent offenses, while also being an alcoholic and exhibiting personality traits related to recklessness, impulsiveness, impatience and emotional immaturity, then I agree, he shouldn't be able to own a gun.

yeah, he probably hasn't. and I'm probably ok with him owning a gun. you gotta be able to redeem yourself somehow from past incidents. All I was saying was that there was a relationship between DUI and firearm ownership.

Exactly. I don't think gun control laws take this into account at all. I know I didn't share it earlier, but I'll go ahead and say it now; (typed in white)
That incident that happened when I was 16 that won't allow me to enter the Navy or own a handgun was that I got sent to a mental hospital. Why did I get sent to a mental hospital? Because, long story short, I got into an argument with my mom, punched a hole in the wall, she called the police, the police sent me to a mental hospital for some reason, and the mental hospital decided I needed to be put on "mood stabilizers" which actually only made me feel worse so I stopped taking them. I forgot what they even diagnosed me as. What happened when I was 16? What do you think, I was a teenager. Angst and rebellion and hormones, I mean FFS, maybe all teenagers don't punch a hole in the wall when they get into a parental argument, but I'm sure there's plenty that have done worse than that. I have a son of my own now and have had a steady job, never committed any crimes whatsoever, and if I get into an argument with someone my first reaction is to rectify the situation, not to punch a hole in a wall.

But, nothing will ever take that "mood instability" off of my record... :sadbanana:

That's dumb, Aldakoopa. Not your "fault" but that it prevents you from joining the Navy and the like.

Well, from experience, the Navy and most services now want no less than a HS diploma with a spotless record. Back in the day they would take most anyone right off of the street. Even the Marines and Army have high standards now... To tell you the truth the Services guidelines are so strict now that 50% of people are discharged before the end of thier first enlistment because of the tighter instructions.

That's mainly because they (the US Government) have been trying to draw down the forces for a while (and are quite effective at it, reducing manning and increasing work load). The Navy also just finished up a Enlisted Review Board (ERB) that pushed a lot of people out of the Navy, as well as Perform To Serve (PTS) which is doing the same but with PTS, if the computer algorithm says no three times you're done, no if ands or butts.

Yeah, I know... I experienced PTS personally... on Shore Duty... with a Sea Intensive Rate (GSM).
