it very nearly idles at boost with the AC on...
from a thermodynamic standpoint, the turbo is run off of waste energy in the exhaust. recovering that should increase my efficiency. I should be full boost all the time.

But more boost means more air. What happens when more air is going in? More fuel is injected. Voila. Worse mileage.
Waste energy, sure, there is no parasitic loss compared to a supercharger. The downside to a turbo, the turbo lag, is what you want to drive in for good economy.

I drive a 1.8L automatic sedan. Got it back in June.
Odometer: 3350
OnStar Lifetime mileage: 26 mpg
Last trip I filled up with 10.8 gallons and got 264 miles driving down to the gas light coming on.
My best mileage to date was a trip to Chicago from Lexington, KY. Probably got right around 40 mpg on the barren wasteland roads that are Indiana going about 60-65 mph.

Eric got it right. You can use theTPS to observe where the throttle is verses boost spikes. You might be surprised where you see them. Conditions play a major factor so you have to observe for yourself.
The1.4 relies on the turbo a bunch to make power for us. If you want fast acceleration a more powerful engine can do it effectively. However, the 1.4 is better at saving fuel in lower output ranges.
Another reason to stay around 60 is drag. The HB has a cD of .33, which is high. However, for HBs it is the norm. Want 50 MPG at 70, lower the car, panel the bottom, and boat tail the rear. Otherwise, complaining is pointless.

Btw, I drove rather hard still using fuel saving techniques, and idled in what I would call excessive. Still got 33.9 MPG. Not bad, but I rather stay north of 35 MPG.
Filled up with 91 this time. I will go back to my normal driving to see how far over 35 I get. I think there is a fuel saving opportunity with the tires. By the time mine go, I hope they have Michelin green line tires. They rode great without the LRR drawbacks.

If you think that was impressive, check out Eric Smit. He has a tune on his car, I think that helps alot. It was these types of posts that inspired me to get a Sonic. My Sonic is still stock.

Just did a couple of road trips, thought I'd report.
I have a 1.4t with a tune. That means I'm running premium gas.
Drove from NC to FL twice, once as far as the keys.
I cruize controlled it the whole way at about 75-80 mph.
Made it up to 100mph a couple of times and it was much more comfortable at that speed than the fit I had been taking down. The Fit was rather wound out at that speed.
Between the first and second run, I changed my oil (3000miles) to Royal Purple.
At first I did get better mileage with the newer oil, as I would have with any oil change, but it soon went down to what I was getting. I saw no noticeable difference in mileage with full synthetic but will continue to use it just because of the turbo.
I averaged 30mpg both trips, all highway.
Although my Sonic was comfortable and confident the entire way, since it only gets 30, I'm thinking of getting an old 90's Park Avenue Ultra to make these trips and keep the miles off my sonic. As I understand it, the Park Avenue Ultra is loaded, supercharged, fast and gets about 30 mpg highway? Wish I knew for sure.
...I got a wild hair ever since watching a vid of this kid that got a buick from his granny. It looked like grannies car too but it was low miles and supercharged. He spent less than a grand to get nearly 500hp. !?!
The original wild hair I got was for this forced air thrill ride. Thank the Sonic for that. It's the first turbo I've had that I got to keep. It's fun.
