Loose bolt on auto transmission?

So, I tried searching, but couldn't find anything related to this. Anyway, I was changing my oil earlier today, and I noticed a bolt on the bottom of my transmission that appears to be lose. Is this supposed to be like this? I hesitated to tighten it, because I honestly have no idea what it is for.

That was my initial thought as well. I'm about to go have another look at it. I tried finding some pictures of autos online, but it turns out most people have more pictures of the top of their car, than the bottom of the transmission.

I would at least tighten it flush.

Mine is the exact same and it is tight. I didn't check to see if it has a taper thread or not. It may have a tapered seat also and is already bottomed out. It does look to have thread sealant/lock on it also.

There's no way thats normal. If it was spec they would've left it flush without the exposed threads. I'd first try to back it out a bit then tighten it slowly. Or, take it to the dealer and ask them what gives.

All are like that.. it is normal... Don' mess with it. If it worries you.. ask your dealer, but they will tell you the same.

Aight. I'm just going to leave it. It wasn't loose at all, so even if it's not supposed to be like that, it's not going anywhere. Next time I see a sonic I'll look at theirs just to be safe.

Also, never Google image search anything that includes the word "tranny"

It may look unusual sitting out slightly but it may be by design. I use bolts like this at work. They have a 37 degree JIC flare on the end for sealing. The threads and the head are not the sealing surface but the end is. Very similar to your brake bleeder screw just without the bleed port.
