Camaro ZL1 suede steering wheel in Sonic!

Well we got a new ZL1 in here at the dealership and I instantly fell in love with the suede flat bottom steering wheel! Its amazing. So I thought well hmm I wonder if it will work on a Sonic since the wheels physically look the same on the outside. So I took the air bags off of both the zl1 and sonic to look under it.. looks the same as far as center bolt and switches and wiring. So I took a chance and ordered a suede gm zl1 steering wheel that comes with new switches and everything except the air bag. It lists for $262 but you can find them for around $190. It just came in today so later after work ill be attempting to install it on my car... Ill update with results and pics...

Also, do you have the part number?

If it works as expected, there may be several more of us on here switching out the steering wheel.

I've been eyeing that wheel for a while now! a guy i work with is helping his buddy rework his ZL1 and one of the plans is to go with a quick disconnect wheel and i have laid claim to the stocker :D

Should work. Brings to mind how upset the members of the Camaro forums got when someone pointed out the steering wheel would swap into the Cruze so I suspect it should also swap into the Sonic.

The $190 price is about $60-100 less then I thought it would be.

Over in the Solstice world they have been swapping Corvette steering wheels onto the Solstice, so I suspect it will fit also. Looking forward to seeing it installed though, sounds like you got a couple packages in the mail today ;)

Nice cant wait to see it installed! It should go on just fine as laborsmith noted the cruze family has also adopted the idea with success.

The ZL1 wheel comes leather wrapped also. I think, I'll have to check to make sure (should have before posting). Looks like the sueded wrap is optional and the leather wrapped steering wheel is standard for the ZL1.

The Sonic RS wheel has an RS emblem in the six o'clock position on the wheel and the ZL1 has a ZL1 emblem in the six o'clock position on the wheel.

What steering wheel puller did you use?

When I swapped to a leather wrapped wheel on my HHR, I couldn't find a wheel puller, so I had to pull on the wheel and have an assistant give a few taps on the steering shaft. I kept the nut on it so it didn't mushroom the threads...and it came off pretty easily.

I believe the ZL1 uses Alacantara, the same that is used for the Cadillac and the Corvette sueded fabric covering.
