"PlastiDipped" ?

This is simply out of curiosity for my own learning ...

On all the other car forums I've been part of, I've never heard the term "plastidipped" for painting. On all the posts I've read on here about it, I've not seen anything actually 'dipped' ... everything has been spray painted (maybe I missed something?).

Why not just call it painted, spray painted or plastic painted, which is in fact what it is?

Please, I'm not trying to upset anyone, not trying to cause any problems or anything like that ... I am just wondering why it's called that on here.

Because it is not paint. It is a removable protective rubber coating that happens to come in an aerosol can.

Plastidip originally came in a can with a lid like a paint bucket so you could dip your tool handles in it to give them a new grip with a rubbery feel. it then was made into a spray and is widely used as a way to change the color of pretty much anything. It comes in many different colors but black is easiest to find in a spray can. Dip your car DOT com

Like Red Sonic LT said, it is a brand of dip-able and sprayable coating named Plasti-Dip. Why people call it plastidip'd vs painted is beyond me. Maybe it's to differentiate from the fact that spray paint is pretty much permanent and takes harsh chemicals to remove and when you plastidip something you're indicating that you can remove it if it chips or you have moved on from that style. And stating that you "I spray painted 'X' with plastidip" is kind of a lot of more words than "I plastidipped 'X'". It could also be a cultural thing, but on Silveradosierra.com they use the same terminology and is a totally different venue.

In the end, if you like saying you "spray painted your Bowties with Plasti-Dip" vs "I plastidip'd my bowties" good on you.

Plasti-dip is kind of like duct-tape in a can. 101 uses lol. I personally started using Platidip on my chrome wheels in the winter on my comp-g to protect them from road salt (and because I am lazy and didn't want to clean my wheels daily). I've mainly used it on wheels on vehicles but use it around the house for all kinds of projects, rusted wrought iron fence panels and my porch swing are all touched up with it. Works great!

And if you are patient enough to do it right you can make it come out great hince the wheels I have done below.

i love it cause it is temporary, so when deciding what parts of my car i think i want to change i dip them, if i don't like it it peels off and if i do it stays well till i get around to painting it correctly. or for rims, when i buy better ones
