We are having problems getting two parking brake cables for our 2015 Sonic LT, 4 Dr HB, 1.8L gas, manual transmission.
The part is no longer manufactured, and we were told there were no after market parts. Chevy Customer Care will not get involved with our mechanic, who has ordered cables from 3 different places, all 3 have been wrong despite the fact that the part number on the box is correct one for the VIN #.
The mechanic showed my husband the cable that was removed. The cables are attached to the brake drums by going through a hole in the drum, and there are plastic clips that open up to hold it in place, similar to molly screws you use on a wall. When you remove the cables, those clips break off, so salvage parts are not an option.
Because the brake cables are attached to the drum, if you do not have a parking brake, you also have no working rear brakes. This doesn't seem right!
The parking brake had been adjusted several times since we purchased the car new, but it has never held.
We just spent $2,000 on what the mechanic calls "the ressurection," but we cannot drive it without rear brakes. Chevy Customer Care won't get involved unless we have the car towed to a Chevy dealer. But as our mechanic pointed out, he tried to get parts directly from Chevy, they were wrong, so how is the dealer going to do any better?
Has anyone else run into this and found a solution?
