Air Conditioner noise

I have 13 Sonic RS with 6 speed manual transmission. I purchased this vehicle on February. Recently, I noticed that there was squaking noise when I turned on the a/c while I am driving. The squeaking noise is on and off interval of almost every minute.

I took the vehicle to the dealer for service. I drove my vehicle with the service advisor rode in my vehicle and the service advisor agreed that there was a squeaking noise from the engine while I was drivng with a/c on it. Next day, I went to the dealer to pick up the vehicle and the service advisor told me that the squeaking noise is normal and can not fix it. He said all the Sonics have the squaking noise when turn on the a/c. Is this TRUE?

I strongly disagree with the service advisor for this issue. I just want you guys ask if your Sonic have a squaking noise when turn on the a/c while driving.

My vehicle have only 5,000 miles on it. Do I need to go to another dealer to get solve this issue?

I never had this kind of problem with squaking noice when turn on the a/c.

My wife drove my car a few weeks ago and complained of a squeak or squeal from the A/C. I drive my most of the time. Temps have been 80s-90s lately. I have A/C on all the time. Never heard any odd noise at all.

So maybe you are right. Maybe Chevy dealrship is right. I didnt take mine in, since Ive never heard it. She hasnt either (anymore).

Mine will whistle on startup and occasionally during operation. Is that what you are talking about?

I had a problem with the fan making a squeaking noise in my LT when set at 1 or 2, it was louder than the air moving through the vents and just sounded like a squeaky old table fan. at 3 and 4 speed settings it was too high-pitch or just covered up by the wind noise.

I was sensing a high pitch noise this afternoon and associated it with my A/C. It was intermittent. Once a minute seems about right.

Anyway, I'll be keeping an eye... err ear on it.

Just rolled over 2,000 miles on a 2013 mt1.4t hatch. I have an obsession with turning off the tunes as I travel down the road with the a/c on waiting for the cycle. Certainly seems to be originating from the passenger side and only when the engine is under some load. I have stared at the engine idling with the hood up waiting for the subtle squeal to reveal itself to no avail.

When I run my ac it makes a noise too (same car, auto rs) It sounds like when someone turns on a faucet in another room. I believe it's just the ac pump cycling on and off.

Is everyone confusing the hissing noise from the expansion device as a squeal or noise from under the hood? Anytime you start a compressor there will be a time when a lot of air is passing through the expansion device before it can build pressure to condense the gas back into a liquid. This sounds like a somewhat loud hissing from the dash.

No hiss here, mine is like a whistle and happens just about anytime I start up the AC. Very noticeable, but I'm used to it now.

I actually worded that bad.
Its not air, its refrigerant in a gas state passing through the regulating device/expansion device before it builds enough pressure to get some liquid flowing.

whistling/hissing, could be the same thing going on.

Its hard to say, hissing when you first turn it on yeah, after that it should quiet down quite a bit.

Do you know if your compressor cycles a lot with the fan on high? Also make sure you turn recirculate on. I recommend it anytime outside temps are above 80F though I use it almost always with the A/C. With hotter temps recirculate will drop your inside temps as well as reduce the load on the system. Recirculate is the button right by the A/C button.

Temps will also be higher when sitting still then when cruising due to less airflow through the condenser.

ChrisJ is right about the expansion sound issue. I'm fully in love with my car but it hisses like a damn CPAP machine. Or a less threatening Darth Vader

...Proud owner of a 2014 Sonic 1.4T LT.

I hear the "breathing" as well. It is fairly regular and usually not TOO loud, but for some reason at times it gets a lot louder and even has a bit of a squeaky noise to it.

It is not annoying enough to bother me but I do hear it. Once summer is over here in the desert I won't need the A/C for awhile...

My Sonic used to make a hell of a clank when turning on the AC. Never effected performance but surely wasn't right.

Air was always cold though. No complaint there
