Same thing happening in my Pontiac Vibe with less than 1K on it. Never heard or saw another one. Random part failure. But scary as I had just been doing 70 on the expressway. Fortunately, it waited until I was on a city street to keel over. Not nearly as scary as my Pontiac Solstice GXP that had no brakes.

Did the driver mention what rental company location, city, and state this Sonic came from or VIN#? I was trying to locate the vehicle to see what the story was on this Sonic.

I think the only amazing thing is that they were offering an LTZ as a rental!

Now you really got me scared. I also own an LTZ and I have a problem with shock absorber (german Schwingungsdämpfer)...it started making some noises at 3k km, and now when I drive up to 50 km/h the sounds are like I would drive rock in my glove department (people do look at me a bit weird) but I am waiting to get a spare part over 6 weeks. Chevrolet dealer says this is a problem in this part of Europe and that they can't do anything for now. Since I am a woman and am not a mechanic, I can only hope this won't cause more problems

My 2 cents are that no one else has heard of this yet, granted not every sonic owner is on this forum either. And the flat could be due to the ball joint failing and breaking the bead at speed when it twisted abruptly. There are obviously a thousand variables and possibilities. Hopefully CS and the dealer will investigate the situation and see if it was driver error, isolated part failure, or who knows what. I'm going to keep driving mine and enjoy it!

That is obviously a dangerous situation.
No matter if "it's hard to get that part in Europe" or not, you shouldn't be driving it.
You should have a loaner, the dealer should be giving it to you, or if someone there is going to be a nasty wrongful death lawsuit.
