Anyone else going to try no muffler?

Fit4Sonic, you do realize that most small engines have had variable valve timing for a decade now? Honda did pioneer some of the technologies, but it's not that big of a deal now...all the manufacturers have highly developed VVT systems. Including the union made, government controlled, Sonic

But I think you missed my somewhat insignificant point. Although (as I've stated before on this forum) I'm certainly no Honda-at-all-costs aficionado, there are few stock rides with 4-cylinder engines that sound like Hondas... especially when VTEC or i-VTEC cuts in.

Other than the sound, I wasn't heralding or singing the praises of Honda and/or their manufacturing designs and processes. If I thought that much of it I wouldn't be trading for a Sonic LTZ!

However, now that YOU started it, I DO hate further lining the very wealthy pockets of union thugs.... uh, I mean parasites... uh, I meant extortionists... uh, I mean union "bosses!"

You just make me laugh You post up rants about how you hate everything about GM bailout loans and the unions, yet you will still support them by buying from them?!?! That is the definition of hypocrisy!

Do not buy the car if you hate everything about GM and the people that build them!

Chevy sure made it a task to try the no muffler thing. As some of you mentioned, it's one continuous run from the end of the car back up to the front. And then there's that HUGE resonator/pre muffler in the center under the car. I will have the exhaust shop hack off the muffler where the pipe turns up and starts it's final run to the back of the car and replace it with a piece of stainless pipe with an exhaust tip on it. And if that's still not nearly loud enough, the big piece under the car will go too. I am determined to get a little more aggressive sound. You can tell the car might sound pretty good by the way it sounds as is.

I would be more willing to hack out the resonator than the muffler. I am sure thats a 40lb weight savings right in the middle of the car too!

I don't hate those who build them... I just hate the unions that use them for their wages when the unions do little of nothing in the way of actual work for the money they siphon from the workers.

If the OP has a hatch and not a sedan, then instead of removing the resonator, I'd replace it with a smaller/lighter version. Trunkless cars (hatchbacks and wagons) without resonators will get much drone on the highway and at constant speeds.

Hmmmm...these days I can't say I'd be willing to go without some sort of muffler in place. I would delete the cat before getting rid of the muffler and/or resonator. Regardless that isn't happening either way with our Sonic. The car is pretty much going to be a highway cruiser for my wife's long commute to/from work. The quieter the better in our case.

We'll run a straight through silencer, probably as quiet as possible believe it or not, since quieter = heavier, but if it's straight through it isn't impeding airflow. Moving the CG will help handling more than anything else, especially with the weight penalties the Sonic takes.... and if we get the minimum race weight lowered, we can always cut it out.

i started with a zzp 2.5" straightpipe cat-back, and the sound was very aggressive, lol and kind of ricey. last week i upgraded the down-pipe and mid-pipe, deleting the last restriction (the 1st cat) and the sound is deafening. sooo much rice tho. ill be buying a muffler tomorrow.

zzperformance.com has a very good write up on the subject, under the descriptions of the various exhaust kits they sell for the sonic.

Yeah the muffler really does help keep that ricey sound at bay. Now here is the sad part. People that I cruise with are now wanting or are trying to copy the cars unique sound.

first I just wanted a little more sound from ours so we chopped out the muffler and welded on a nice tip. It was good for a while then we got used to it and it wasnt loud enough anymore. So we went back and cut out the resonator. That gave her a lot more growl but we are getting used to it again. So hopefully next mont we will get a cold air intake and high flow mid pipe.

If you keep cutting back you will soon have a side pipe exiting in front by the engine like a dragster. You think that will pass an inspection in CA?

Everyone has an opinion for what sounds " good", but the only clips that I have heard worth anything are from Borla, unfortunately they are not in my price range. So that means I live with stock.
