Agreed. Some cars, including my friends Accent Sedan have some kind of fuel management system that actually consumes less fuel in gear than in neutral.

But I can tell first hand that the MT Sonic consumes less fuel in neutral.

An automatic however may not however save fuel in neutral, but I can't comment on that because I haven't owned an automatic since my testicles descended.

You are correct but the instant does not account for the physics beyond the present. The reason to coast downhill is to maintain or even accelerate for upcoming road features.

I think of it like flying a glider. They try to save so much energy is moves. Much of that transitions to driving.

When you need to slow down, engine braking is more more efficient as you are using almost zero fuel to slow down over a distance.

Edit: I say almost zero fuel because some say the fuel does not fully cut off. I think it does, but I say almost zero to deal with the doubters.

I agree with General on the coasting vs engine braking debate.

It's also more in depth than just when you can afford to slow down more. Just being in gear with your foot off the gas does not mean you are in Decel Fuel Cutoff Mode (DCFC).

If you're not up to operating temp no DCFC,

if your RPMs are too low no DCFC (from my observations you must be above 1500 rpm to even start DCFC and then it will stay active until ~1100 RPM). If you're in 6th it likes to hunt and peck with DCFC, sometimes it kicks on, others it does not and sometime it kicks on-then off-then on-fhen stays in DCFC.

Meanwhile your bleeding off speed faster than coasting and using more gas. I've noticed that I get better instaneous MPG in nuetral than coasting and not in fuel cutoff mode.

So it really does depend on more than a few variables if its good or not to coast in gear or in nuetral. Personally my best 2 tanks have been by coasting, my 3rd best tank (4mpg lower than the 2 best) was using DCFC the majority of the time. But the temps were lower for that tank so the difference is quatifiable yet. Also of note when I DCFC a lot it skews my DIC far optomistic, like 5-6mpg off versus 2-3mpg.

I can watch my mpg climb rapidly when I do.
When I coast the same hill in 6th I don't get close to 76 mph and my mpg doesn't climb as fast.

I can math. And I'm confident in what I've said.

On another note. I can't wait to finish this month so I can go back to my normal driving style. My monthly avg will already be skewed from my first entry due to the clutch break in behavior. So I may ask for a special calculation for my own personal knowledge with the first entry omitted.

This last tank I've been trying with every ounce of restraint to stay out of boost and to keep it under 70. It's fuqqing stressful, not fun at all, but I want to know my baseline for what I'm capable of.

When this month is over I'm done with this sh¡t.:blankface:

You can keep adding your data, just don't try so hard. Irregardless of whether you try for MPG or speed your data is important. It will show people what to expect in those conditions.
