So I live in the Central NY area around Ithaca/Syracuse and have only have my 2012 Sonic Hatchback(1.8L auto) for a few weeks. I've taken it on a 5 hour drive to/from NYC and averaged 34MPG on the highway, and a short trip to and from Syracuse where I averaged the same on back roads and mostly highway. It seems like when I'm in the city though(Ithaca), my average MPG will go to 16-18MPG between fill ups. I'm in a hilly area that has an annoying amount of stop signs and I also have some cheap Goodyear Nordic winter tires on, but can that really cause my MPG to drop so low?
Is it normal for Sonics to only get between 16-18MPG in the city with snow tires?
I also noticed sometimes that my Sonic looks like it "forgets" to switch gears. Sometimes going up a hill if I hold my foot on the pedal it may get to and stay at 3-4K RPM until I ease my foot slightly off the gas, and then it shifts up. If anything I feel as though that may be the issue with my MPG, but I've seen a couple posters here talk about that like it's normal for this car.
