CEL light on and oil all over the engine bay

I changed the oil last night on my 2013 sonic 1.4t. This morning on my way to work, the CEL came on and I could smell oil burning. Pulled over and opened the hood to find oil everywhere. Thought maybe I didn’t tighten the oil fill cap enough so cleaned up what I could and took the cap off and put it back on. Checked the oil level and it was full.

Drove the rest of the way to work with the CEL still on. Opened the hood when I got here and new oil all over the place.

Did a search and found people have found issues with the oil pressure sensor. Going to go to autozone and have the code read.

Anyone else have this issue? Hoping it might just be the sensor leaking as I have double checked both the oil fill cap And the filter housing.

oil pressure sensor is right below the oil cap.. with engine running did you look under the hood. Probably a cracked pipe and it's replacement time.

When you reinstalled the oil filter cap did you properly torque it or just tightened it down? Applying too much torque over time can crack the housing. Even a small tiny crack will leak under pressure. Wash the engine down using a good engine cleaner then make sure oil level is full and run the engine at idle and have someone accelerate the engine. You should find the leak. If the oil cap leaks it will idle rough due to loss of vacuum. Almost like removing the oil cap while it's running. Sounds like it's a easy leak to find. Repairing it is a different story depending on what you find.

When I put it on I just twisted until it stopped... feels like it has a positive stop so it wasn’t “as tight as you can go and 1/4 more turn”.

I will try that out. It idles and run normal. No rough idle or stuttering.

DID YOU put the O-Ring on the oil tube cap??

The oil filter cap call's for 24Nm. It says it right on there.

Never took it off. It was a blue o ring. You are talking about the filter housing?

I was able to go out and have a buddy rev the engine, I did not see oil coming from anywhere. Does the oil fill Have a gasket on it? I did not see an O-ring or anything on mine.

Check the camshaft solenoid valve. It sticks out the head in front. It uses oil pressure to actuate. It probably doesn't move under no load even though you revved it up sitting still. Might have to go for a hard ride and put the engine through its paces. Intermittent oil leaks are the worse. You have to drive the vehicle at various speeds and see from there.

the oil cap has a rubber o-ring on it. The filter itself doesn't. The filter comes with an o-ring for the cap. I'm sure it's on there then.

I would clean it, go for a drive around the block then look. Might indicate WHERE it's coming from.

Best Guess

Best guess is that it has something to do with the oil change. Chances of this happening the day after you changed the oil for some unrelated reason seem pretty slim...

The filter housing on the 1.4 turbo is NOT easy to access or see. My guess is that you did not tighten the filter cap all the way down. They do seem to "stop" when the o-ring first meets the housing, but you need to put oil on the outside of the o-ring so it slips down inside the housing and seals the system.
